PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown junior Kyla Jones poured in a career-high 34 points, but the Bears could not overcome the offensive power of Florida Gulf Coast in an 89-75 loss on Wednesday night (Dec. 28).
Jones led the Bears in scoring and reached 30 points for the second time this season, becoming the first Bear since Shayna Mehta in 2018-19 to have two 30-point games in a season. Jones was 14-for-19 from the field and 6-for-8 from the free throw line. The Chicago, Ill., native also led the Bears with six rebounds.
Isabella Mauricio was second on the team with 10 points and Charlotte Jewell added nine. Jewell led the team with four assists and added five rebounds.
As a team, Brown (7-5) shot a season-high 53.7 percent from the floor, outshooting Florida Gulf Coast (11-2) by five percent. The Bears also held a 54-28 advantage in the paint. The biggest difference in the game came from beyond the arc. Florida Gulf Coast entered the game as one of the top three-point shooting teams in the nation and went 16-for-34 (47.1 percent) from deep. The Bears finished the game just 2-for-9 from three-point range.
Midway through the first quarter, Jones cut FGCU's lead to 10-8 with a layup but used a 13-2 run to close out the quarter and lead 23-10 after the first ten minutes.
Jones scored 11 points in the second quarter as Brown cut the Eagles' lead to nine multiple times, but again a late run put Brown in a 50-33 hole at halftime.
Brown began to chip away at the lead in a barn-burner of a third quarter. Layups by Jewell and Jones cut FGCU's lead to seven midway through the third. The Eagles would begin to pull away again but Jones, who scored 13 points in the quarter, helped Brown win the third quarter 28-25.
Mauricio scored five points and Jones added another layup to match her career high as Brown pulled within seven less than four minutes into the final quarter. Jones would hit two free throws to set the mark and after a layup by Gianna Aiello and a free throw from Mauricio Brown had cut the lead to six.
The comeback would fall short as the Bears were outscored 10-2 over the final 2:40 of the ballgame, ending non-conference play with the defeat.
