PRINCETON, R.I. – Brown volleyball fell just short of completing a comeback over Princeton on Friday, falling to the Tigers in five sets.
Brown (11-9, 7-4 Ivy) was led by Sophia Miller who matched her career-high with 24 kills and hit .400 in the match. Miller has now finished with three-straight 20-kill matches for the first time in her career. Kayla Grieble was second on the team with 14 kills and Beau Vanderlaan added 10, while hitting .409.
The Bears' offense was led by Ella Park who finished with game with 49 assists.
Brown jumped on top of Princeton (18-3, 10-1 Ivy) early, finishing the first set hitting .419 and holding the Tigers to a .184 hitting percentage. The Bears took the first set 25-19 behind seven kills from Miller. Brown used a 3-0 run with the score tied at 13 to take control of the set and never looked back as a Miller kill ended the set.
The Bears hit .333 in the second set but found themselves down late 23-19. A kill by Vanderlaan and an ace from Victoria Vo pulled the Bears within two but Princeton would close out the set 25-22.
Brown dropped the third set to find itself in a hole but the defense kept the Bears in the match. Brown finished the match with 17 blocks, led by nine from Kate Sheire and eight from both Vanderlaan and Gabby Derrick. Jessie Golded led Brown with 17 digs and Vo was second on the team with 10.
In the fourth set, Brown slowed down Princeton's offense, holding the Tigers to a .133 hitting percentage. Brown had a 12-10 lead before a kill by Vanderlaan and three errors from Princeton put Brown up six. The Bears' lead grew to 18-11 after a block by Vanderlaan and Park.
Princeton battled back to cut the lead to two multiple times but Brown always had an answer. Miller had three kills in Brown's last four points to force a fifth set.
Playing in their second-straight five-set match, Brown hung with Princeton until a two-straight points gave Princeton match point. The Bears fought those points off with a kill by Shiere, block by Griebl and service ace by Miller to tie the set. Another kill by Griebl earned Brown match point. Brown failed on two-straight match points at 15-14 and 16-15 before Princeton scored three-straight points to end the match.
