Volleyball clinches Ivy League Tournament berth with five-set win at Penn

PHILADELPHIA – Brown volleyball punched its ticket to the 2022 Ivy League Tournament with a five-set come from behind win over Penn on Saturday.
Brown (12-9, 8-4 Ivy) played in its third-straight three set match, pulling out the win for the second time in those matches. For the second-straight win, Brown had to overcome losing the first two sets.
Sophia Miller led the Bears with 16 kills and had 12 digs for a double-double. Kate Sheire was second on the team with 13 kills and had five blocks. Beau Vanderlaan hit .478 with 12 kills and eight blocks.
Gabby Derrick finished the night with seven blocks and added six kills, hitting .545. Jilienne Widener added seven kills. Ella Park filled up the statsheet for the Bears with 42 assists, seven digs, six blocks and six kills.
Jessie Golden was the team leader with 16 digs, Victoria Vo had 13 and Kayla Griebl had 11.
The Bears dropped the first two sets to Penn (2-20, 1-11 Ivy), 25-22, 26-24. Brown responded in set three, pulling out a 25-20 win. The Bears jumped ahead 6-2 and after Penn closed the gap to 15-12, Brown rattled off four-straight points, including blocks by Vanderlaan, Sheire and Widener.
Penn cut Brown's lead to two but Widener and Miller responded with two kills. Brown won three of the last four points in the set to close it out.
The Bears then dominated the fourth set with a 25-7 win. Up 6-5, Brown scored the next six points, including two aces from Jessie Golden. Bronw then went on an 8-0 run with three more aces and kills by Vanderlaan and Widener. After a point from Penn, Brown closed out the set with five-straight points, including a set-winning block by Vanderlaan and Miller.
Penn won the first four points of the fifth set and held a 6-4 lead before Brown scored three points. After Penn tied the set, Vanderlaan scored the next two points with a kill and an ace to put Brown up three. Penn would score just one more point and Brown would finish off the match with five-straight. The duo of Derrick and Sheire closed out the match for Brown with back-to-back blocks.
UP NEXT
Brown will be back home for the final weekend of the regular season, beginning with a match against Harvard on Nov. 11.
