Arnolie's career-high, last-second free throw, leads Bears past Monmouth

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A free throw by Grace Arnolie with 0.8 seconds left on the clock gave Brown (4-2) a 70-69 win over Monmouth (3-3) on Friday (Nov. 25) in the Pizzitola Sports Center.

Arnolie finished the game with a career-high 23 points, none bigger than the last-second free throw. Arnolie was fouled on a three-point attempt with less than a second left and the game tied at 69. After missing the first two free throws, Arnolie drilled the final one and Monmouth's last second shot was off the mark as Brown earned its fourth-straight win.

"In the recruiting process I saw Gracie [Arnolie] play with that swag and not be afraid of the moment," said Monique LeBlanc, Elizabeth F. Turner '98 Coaching Chair for Women's Basketball. "She is someone that I've trusted to be ready and be willing and prepared to look to score."

Arnolie led the Bears in scoring, scoring 14 of her 23 points in the second half and 10 points in the final quarter. Arnolie led Brown, going 4-for-8 from three-point range. Charlotte Jewell finished with a season-best 14 points, scoring 12 points in the first half. Mackenzie Leahy also finished in double-figures with 11.

Jewell was the leader on the team with nine rebounds and added three assists and three steals. Arnolie also finished the game with three assists and three steals.

The Bears finished the game with a 16-1 advantage in fast break points and Brown held the lead for more than 34 minutes in the game.

"It was really great to see us come out aggressive and to see Charlotte be aggressive and look to score," said LeBlanc. "On a night when Kyla was having a hard time scoring it was great to see the team step up and find a way."

After building a 13-point lead in the second quarter, Brown let Monmouth back into the game as the Hawks cut the lead to two with 1:37 left in the half. The Bears responded with a 6-0 run to end the half, taking a 40-32 lead into the break.

Twice in the third quarter, the Bears took a 10-point lead, but with a minute left in the quarter, Monmouth took the at 51-50, but Leahy's jumper with 53 seconds put Brown ahead going into the fourth quarter.

Monmouth took a four-point lead early in the fourth quarter but layups by Kyla Jones and Arnolie tied the game. The game remained separated by one possession until a three by Arnolie with three minutes in the game. Two-straight buckets for Monmouth tied the game before Arnolie hit another jumper to put Brown back ahead. Monmouth tied the game on a layup before Arnolie played hero for the Bears.

Brown will be on the road for their next game, traveling to Central Connecticut State on Monday (Nov. 28) at 7 p.m.
