Volleyball wins fourth-straight after sweep at Harvard

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Brown volleyball earned its fourth-straight win with a 3-0 victory at Harvard on Saturday. The Bears matched a season-high with 11 service aces in the win.

Brown (8-6, 4-1 Ivy) cruised to the win beating Harvard (2-11, 1-4 Ivy) 25-22, 25-12, 25-18. The Bears finished the game hitting. 306 and held the Crimson to just .158 hitting.

The service line was a big advantage for Brown as the Bears finished with 11 aces to just two for Harvard. Brown had 11 aces against Air Force in the opening weekend of the season. Kayla Griebl led Brown with a career-high six aces, becoming the first Bear since Shirin Tooloee in 2017 to have six aces in a contest.

Beau Vanderlaan led Brown with 14 kills, hitting a career-best .737, the highest number by a Bear since Gabby Derrick hit .800 against Dartmouth last season. Sophia Miller was second on the team with 10 kills and Kate Sheire finished with eight. Cierra Jenkins guided the offense with 33 assists and was tied with Victoria Vo for the team lead with nine digs.

Brown was outhit by Harvard in the first set .308 to .212 and the Crimson built a 15-11 lead before Griebl stepped to the service line. Griebl would collect four aces on the course of a 9-0 run that also featured to kills by Vanderlaan as Brown jumped ahead 20-15. Harvard used a 5-0 run to tie the set at 21 but an error and kill by Derrick put Brown up 23-21. Sheire closed out the set with two-straight kills.

The Bears' offense came to life in the second set, hitting .588 and not committing an error. Up 15-11, Brown began another big run. Vanderlaan added two kills and a block during the run and two-straight aces by Vo finished the 9-0 run and gave Brown set point. After a kill by Harvard, Vanderlaan ended the set with a kill.

Kills by Sheire, Miller and Vanderlaan put Brown up 9-6 early in the third set. Two more aces and two kills by Vanderlaan fueled a 6-1 run for Brown as the Bears jumped ahead 15-9. Up 18-13, Sheire, Miller and Griebl all added kills as part of a 5-0 run to put Brown up 10. After a Harvard run cut the lead to six, Griebl and Sheire each collected kills to end the match.

UP NEXT
Brown will be back home for its next two matches to close out the first half of the Ivy League schedule. The Bears will host Penn on Friday (Oct. 14) and Princeton on Saturday (Oct. 15).
