Volleyball sweeps Penn for fifth-straight victory

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown volleyball swept Penn for its fifth-straight win on Friday. The Bears hit .376 as a team in the win over the Quakers.
Brown (9-6, 5-1 Ivy) cruised to a straight-set win, 25-13, 25-21, 25-17 and hit above .333 in all three sets. Kayla Griebl and Kate Sheire finished the night with a team-high 10 kills each. Sheire hit .444 and Griebl ended the night hitting .360. Beau Vanderlaan hit .500 on the night with eight kills.
The offense was guided by Cierra Jenkins who had 37 assists. Jenkins collected her 1,000th-career assist during the third set on a kill by Sheire.
On defense, Victoria Vo led the Bears with 11 digs and Sophia Miller had eight. The Bears outblocked Penn (2-14, 1-5) 7-1. Vanderlaan led Brown with four blocks and Sheire and Gabby Derrick each had three.
The Bears got the defense going early in the match with three blocks during a 6-0 run as Brown jumped ahead 7-3. During the middle of the set, Brown ripped off an 11-2 run as Brown pushed its lead from 11-8 to 21-10. The final three points of the run came by kills from Sheire, Derrick and Griebl. Vanderlaan and Jenkins teamed up for a block to close out the set.
A 7-1 run that featured two kills by Sheire, plus one by Vanderlaan and Griebl put Brown up 9-3 early in the second. The two teams traded points until Brown was up 17-11 after an error by Penn. Brown went up 20-15 with a kill by Jenkins but Penn scored three-straight to make it a two-point game. The set went back and forth until Brown earned set point on a kill by Vanderlaan. After a point by Penn, Griebl ended the set with kill.
Back to back kills from Jilienne Widener put Brown up 13-6 midway through the third set and the Bears pushed their lead to eight after a kill by Miller. Penn cut Brown's lead to six but an error and ace by Jenkins put Brown two points away from the win. Kills by Elise Curtin and Kate Sheire ended the match for the Bears.

Brown will take on Princeton to close out the first half of the Ivy League season on Saturday (Oct. 15) with the match starting at 5 p.m.
