Women’s Soccer Earns 4-0 Season-Opening Win over New Haven

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Angelina Vargas, junior Kyra Treanor, and first-years Taylor Green and Georgia Steinbach each scored a goal as Brown University women's soccer earned a 4-0 victory over the University of New Haven in its season and home opener on Thursday night at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
The Bears (1-0-0) tallied three goals in the second half after scoring the game's opening goal in the eighth minute on their way to the win over the visiting Chargers (0-2-0).
"Getting four different goal scorers is impressive," Kia McNeill, the Messing Family Head Coach for Brown Varsity Women's Soccer, said. "We created a lot of chances in the final third. We probably could have put a few more away, but I think the biggest strength is just our depth. You saw when we put some substitutions into the game, they kept the level high and scored some great goals for us. I think the more we continue to lean into that, the more dangerous we are going to be as a team."
Vargas opened the game's scoring with a goal in the eighth minute before Treanor, Green, and Steinbach each found the back of the net in the 65th, 77th, and 90th minutes respectively.
"It was a good team win," Vargas said. "I feel like everyone worked so hard. Getting a goal in the last nine seconds – our team really fought to the end. I love to see it. It was a great start to the season."
Treanor paced the Bears with three points behind a goal and an assist, while senior Joy Okonye, senior Claire Silverman, sophomore Naomi Nnewihe, and first-year Maja Cenanovic each added one assist.
In goal, senior Gurleen Toor and sophomore Addison Etter combined for the shutout with each goalkeeper playing 45 minutes apiece.
Among the Bears' field players, juniors Chesney Robinson and Brooke Birtwistle each played the full 90 minutes.
Vargas initiated the contest's scoring in the eighth minute, slotting a shot into the back of the net off a breakaway. After Nnewihe won the ball just over the attacking side of the midfield line, Vargas carried the ball past the keeper and slid a shot into the goal.
Treanor doubled Brown's margin to 2-0 in the 65th minute, rising up at the edge of the six-yard box to head the ball into the goal following a corner kick from Silverman.
Making the margin 3-0 in the 77th minute, Green positioned herself inside the goal area and used a one-timed touch to re-direct a cross from Treanor from the right side past the goalkeeper.
Closing out the contest's scoring, Steinbach fired a strike into the left side of the goal off a shot from just inside the penalty area in the game's waning moments in the 90th minute.
For the match, Brown held advantages in shots (20-1), shots on goal (9-0), and corner kicks (16-0).
