PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown softball head coach Kate Wheeler has announced the hiring of Mark Correia as an assistant coach. Correia joins the Bears after having spent the last four seasons at Eastern Connecticut State.
Correia served as the assistant and hitting coach for Eastern Connecticut and during his four-year run on the staff, the Warriors finished with a 131-46 winning percentage, including three conference tournament titles and two trips to the NCAA Championships in 2019 and 2021.
"We are fortunate to have Mark joining our staff," said Wheeler. "He has a true passion for studying and coaching hitting and had proven success during his time with DIII powerhouse Eastern Connecticut. We are excited for him to take the reigns of our offense."
Correia was also part of a coaching staff that was named NFCA Regional Coaching Staff of the Year in 2019 and 2022. During the 2021 season, Correia's offense finished in the top-10 in the country in seven major categories. The team finished in the top-20 in seven major categories in 2022.
A resident of West Greenwich, RI, Correia served as head coach of the Connecticut Bombers (North Franklin, CT) for 12 seasons -- coaching athletes between the ages of 14 and 18 -- and as an assistant coach at Bacon Academy in Colchester for eight years prior to joining the Eastern staff.
In his coaching career, Correia has helped send more than 20 youngsters to the college ranks. Correia is a student of the game, achieving the level of "Endorsed Hitting Coach" and holding a 1-Star Certification through the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). In addition, he is a certified mental performance coach through Brian Cain Peak Performance.
A New Bedford, MA native, Correia played four years of football under Walt Nadzak at the University of Connecticut (1979-82), helping the Huskies to a share of the Yankee Conference championship as a senior. Correia is a member of the New Bedford High School football and all-sports Halls of Fame and served as an ice hockey official for ten years. He holds a degree in education and sports marketing from UConn.
