
Brown Set for First Matchup at Central Connecticut

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown football team will hit the road this Saturday afternoon to close out its non-league schedule with its first-ever matchup with Central Connecticut State. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and will be streamed live on NEC Front Row.

OPENING KICKOFF
· The Bears are coming off a tough 38-10 defeat at No. 25 Rhode Island in the 40th annual Governor's Cup last weekend, dropping them to 1-2.
· CCSU is off to an 0-5 start, including an 0-2 mark in Northeast Conference play, with an average margin of defeat over 26 points.
· The matchup will be Brown's final non-league game of the season.
RARE NORTHEAST CONFERENCE CLASH
• Saturday's game will mark the first-ever meeting on the gridiron between Brown and CCSU.
• Brown has only played one previous game against a current NEC football school, a 28-17 win over Duquesne at home in the 2007 season opener.
• Brown's only other games against NEC opponents came against former members Albany (2-0) and Bryant (4-2).
• Brown's all-time record against the NEC: 7-2
THE BEST FOR LAST
• Brown has outscored its opponents 49-7 in the fourth quarter this season, including putting up 21 points in the fourth quarter in each of its first two games.
• The 49 points and +42 point differential in the 4th quarter both lead the Ivy League.
• In 2021, Brown outscored opponents 122-73 in the fourth quarter.
• Brown outscored their opponents in the fourth quarter in each of their first seven games of 2021.
GETTING THEIR KICKS
• Brown enters this weekend No. 1 in the Ivy and 17th in FCS by allowing only 1.50 yards per punt return this season, allowing only six total return yards on four return attempts.
• On the other side, the Bears are second in the league and 31st nationally on punt returns, averaging 11.83 yards per return, all from senior Wes Rockett.
SWALLOWING THE WHISTLE
• The Bears enter this weekend ranked No. 2 in the nation for fewest penalties this season (15), one more than Bucknell (14).
• Brown is 26th in FCS in fewest penalties per game (5.0 per game).
SCOUTING CENTRAL CONNECTICUT
· The Blue Devils opened the 2022 campaign with a 28-3 loss at FBS UConn before falling to Sacred Heart, 14-10, in their NEC opener.
· From there, the Blue Devils have dropped meetings against Southeastern Louisiana (70-6), UAlbany (45-26), and St. Francis (Pa.) (39-13).
· A pair of Blue Devil quarterbacks, Mitchell Shon and Romelo Williams, have split time through the first five games. Shon enters Saturday 25-for-58 in the air with 351 yards and three touchdowns while Williams enters 39-for-68 in the air for 330 yards.
· Kyren Petteway and Erik Surratt both have 15 receptions through five games to lead the Blue Devils. Surratt leads the team with 240 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
· On the ground, Nasir Smith has taken the bulk of the workload and has 316 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 78 attempts.
