PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men's soccer team defeated Northeastern 1-0 on a rainy evening at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
Freshman goalkeeper Henrik Weiper had the performance of his young career with eight saves, keeping the Bears in the game despite being outshot.
His efforts were rewarded in the 82nd minute when Kojo Dadzie took advantage of a Northeastern miscue. A ball ricocheted off a Husky defender and straight back toward their own goal. Dadzie was the first to it and only needed one touch to bury it from just outside the 18-yard box.
"All credit goes to the guys tonight for putting in a very good performance, especially in the second half," assistant coach Andy Parker said. "It was a very difficult night to play, but they defended very well in key moments, Henrik made some big saves, and Kojo popped up when we needed him in the second half and finished his chance."
The win lifted the Bears to 5-2-1 on the year, including a perfect 4-0-0 mark at home. Northeastern fell to 3-5-3 on the season.
Five of Weiper's eight saves came in the first half as the Huskies took a total of 11 shots during the opening 45 minutes of action. Things slowed down a bit in the second as both teams combined for just six shots during the second frame.
Luckily for Brown, one of those was Dadzie's game-winner that helped the Bears improve to 7-1-0 all-time against Northeastern. The last Brown win over the Huskies came back in 2006.
"The guys didn't quit," Parker said. "They grinded for 90 minutes. That performance represents a lot of the values that this program was founded upon."
Brown will host Cornell this Saturday, Oct. 8 at 4 p.m. in its return to Ivy League action.
