Sanchez’s Goal Lifts Brown to 1-0 Win Over Stonehill

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Nicholas Sanchez's second half goal lifted the Brown men's soccer team (3-1-0) to its second straight victory, with a 1-0 win over Stonehill (2-2-2) on Friday night at Stevenson-Pincince Field.

Brown's goal came in the 59th minute following a setup by Carlo Brown and Lorenzo Amaral. Brown sent the ball to Amaral while Sanchez came up the side. Amaral fed the ball to Sanchez who sent it past Stonehill's Felix Van Der Hagen and into the top corner of the net.

"I saw an open net, and thought to shoot it near the post because the goalie was shielding a little to the left," Sanchez said. "But I'm really grateful to get my first goal here at Brown."

Brown's defense and goaltending played a key role in its success against Stonehill. The Skyhawks recorded nine shots for the night, with only one landing on target. Goalkeeper Graham Kois made the save, and earned his second clean sheet of the season.

"I mean I haven't had to do too much," Kois said. "I've got a great group of guys in front of me, everyone's been working hard on defense."

"We've got a good team culture here," Kois continued. "Guys like this scoring goals, defending one, we're doing alright."

The Bears and Skyhawks faced a tight first half, with both teams unable to find the back of the net. Brown recorded eight shots in the first half, and nearly doubled that total in the second.

With Friday night's win, the Bears improve to 3-1 on the season and remain undefeated at home.

Brown remains undefeated in its series against Stonehill with a 3-0 record.

The Bears continue their four-game homestand when they host in-state rival URI on Tuesday, Sept. 15. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
