Brown Wraps up Competition at Ivy League Heps

BRONX, N.Y. – The Brown men's and women's cross country programs concluded competition at the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships on Friday afternoon at Van Cortland Park.
The men's and women's teams both took eighth place overall in their respective races, with Princeton taking the Ivy title on the men's side for the second straight year, and Harvard defending their Ivy title on the women's side.
For the women, six runners set lifetime personal records with senior Lily Harding leading the pack and hitting a big PR of 22:37.7 to lead Brown's pack on the 6K course. Senior Emma Madgic finished second on Brown in 22:38.4, followed by senior Sarah Reichheld (22:41.6), sophomore Isolde McManus (22:53.0) and junior Isa Stronski (22:55.5) to round out the top five. Freshman Emily Mrakovcic (23:35.5) finished sixth on the team and sophomore Maxine Montoya rounded out the Bears' top seven in 23:38.3.
"Lily Harding had a really big breakthrough as she had a massive PR to lead the team," said coach Hannah Chappell-Dick. "Six women ran lifetime personal bests on a very hilly course. The strategy on the women's side was to start out conservative, run as a pack and slowly start to pass people on the hills. This worked really well, as the women had a very strong last kilometer. As we approach NCAA Regionals, we will be a little less conservative and look forward to attempting to break into the top-15 in the regional at the same course."
On the men's side, junior Evan Sherman led Brown's pack for the fifth time this season in the eight-kilometer race with a 41st place overall finish in 25:39.0. Senior Aaron Siff-Scherr was second on the Bears in 25:56.1, followed by senior Nate Price (26:38.3), sophomore Sam Colton (26:59.4) and freshman Jason Markopoulos (27:04.3) to round out Brown's scoring five runners. Freshman John Farrell (27:09.0) and senior Colby Zarle (27:11.5) rounded out Brown's top seven.
"Obviously not what we envisioned coming into the day," coach Kurt Benninger said. "Our group is pretty young. It was really nice to get our guys into this environment, see and feel what the race is like so we can have a reference point going forward as we look to take steps towards our program's future goals."
The Bears will return to Van Cortland Park in two weeks on Friday, November 11 for the NCAA Northeast Regionals.
