Field Hockey Records Third Straight Shutout with 2-0 Win Over Wagner
10/2/2022 4:08:00 PM | Field Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears (8-2, 1-1 Ivy League) posted their third consecutive shutout with a 2-0 home win over the Wagner Seahawks (5-5, 1-0 NEC) Sunday afternoon at Goldberger Family Field.
Catie Summers and Imogen Govan found the back of the net for the Bears with captain Julia Hitti recording her third defensive save of the season.
"We certainly were not fresh, Dartmouth gave us a really good game yesterday and we knew that Wagner is very dangerous, they have some attackers that can really score at any point," said head coach Britt Broady. "To come out here and have a really gritty performance was great. It really felt that our attack won us the first half and our defense won us the second half.
"To be able to put a game together when you're not fresh and have your area of the field be responsible for the ball at different times and to find a way to win is a huge step for us and our maturity."
After a scoreless opening quarter, Catie Summers broke through halfway through the second quarter with her second goal of the season. A through ball from Lucy Adams was mishandled by a Seahawk, and Summers collected the ball with speed and beat Wagner goalkeeper Daisy Ruhle (1 save).
Brown was awarded four straight penalty corners late in the opening half and Imogen Govan found the back of the net on the fourth chance. Emma Rothkopf ripped a shot to the far post for Govan to tip the ball past Ruhle for her third goal of the season.
Wagner got its first shot attempt of the game in the third quarter with Brine turning aside the Seahawk shot off a corner.
The Seahawks ratcheted up the pressure in the fourth quarter and fired 9 of the team's 11 shots in the frame. Brine stopped all three shots on goal in the final quarter.
Hitti preserved Brown's two-goal lead late in the game with her third defensive save, swatting a Julia Pastorino shot out of the air and out of harm's way. Brine made the initial save on Pastorino before Hitti turned aside the second chance.
