
Water polo takes down Gannon and Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown men's water polo earned two wins to start the weekend, beating Gannon and Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday.
Brown (11-7) took down Gannon 18-9 before earning a hard-fought win over Pomona-Pitzer 12-11.
"It was a good day for us to come out with two wins," said head coach Felix Mercado. "I felt offensively we did a better job with shot selection and defensively we made some good stops. Tomorrow will be another day of tough opponents.
BROWN 18, GANNON 9
Ilias Stothart led Brown with five goals in the win over Gannon to start the weekend. Nick Berry, Matt Simko, Evan Moore and Gabe Chang all had two goals in the win.
After falling behind 1-0 early, Brown scored three goals with Trey Rogers, Chang and Thomas Hoffmeister all scoring. Stothart, Berry and Cole Atwell all scored later in the first as Brown led 6-4 after one.
The Bears took control of the game with a 7-1 advantage in the second quarter. Stothart scored two goals in the quarter with Daniel Hadar, Chang, Simko, Berry and Leo Berkman all found the back of the net as well for the Bears.
Stothart's fourth and fifth goal of the game came in the third quarter and Simko and Moore each scored as the lead increased to 17-7. The Bears' final goal came from Moore in the fourth quarter.
BROWN 12, POMONA-PITZER 11
In a battle against Pomona-Pitzer, Brown held on for a one-goal win as the Sagehens missed two shots in the last 30 seconds. Gabe Chang and Leo Berkman each scored three goals for Brown in the win.
Down 1-0, Brown earned goals from Hoffmeister, Stothart and Berkman before Pomona-Pitzer scored with under 10 seconds left as Brown led 3-2.
Brown maintained the lead with a goal from Simko and two five-meter penalty goals from Berkman and Chang kept the Bears in front. A final penalty shot made by Cole Atwell put Brown up 7-4 at the break.
Pomona-Pitzer climbed back into the game, winning the third quarter 4-2. Berkman and Chang scored for the Bears but the lead was cut to 9-8 with eight minutes left to play.
The Bears started the fourth with goals from Berry and Chang to jump ahead four before two goals from the Sagehens. Cole Atwell scored for Brown with three minutes left to put the Bears up two. After a goal with 2:24 to play by Pomona-Pitzer, Brown held off the Sagehens for the one-goal win.
UP NEXT
Brown will play two more games tomorrow, taking on No. 6 Long Beach State at 12 p.m. and Salem at 3 p.m.
