Brown Falls to #25 Rhode Island in 40th Governor's Cup
10/1/2022 9:52:00 PM | Football
Saturday marked the 40th Governor's Cup and 106th overall meeting between Brown and Rhode Island. Listed attendance at Meade Stadium was 5,028.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Rams struck on the first two drives in the opening quarter as Marques DeShields broke off a 21-yard rush and Jaylen Smith punched it in from six yards to take a 14-0 lead with 8:13 remaining in the first quarter.
- The Bears got on the board as Christopher Maron nailed a 45-yard field goal into the wind with 5:41 remaining in the first. Maron's field goal capped a six-play, 48-yard Bruno drive.
- The Rams rattled off three touchdowns in the second quarter to stretch the lead to 38-3 at halftime. DeShields added his second rushing touchdown of the night and Caleb Warren caught a pair of touchdown passes in a 19-second span late in the half.
- The third quarter went scoreless at the Brown defense held the Rhode Island offense to a pair of three and outs and a turnover on downs.
- Allen Smith found the end zone with 3:22 remaining in the fourth as he took the direct snap at the URI one-yard line and broke the plane for the touchdown.
- "Congratulations to Rhode Island, they're a terrific football team and winners of the Governor's Cup. They certainly deserve it with their performance tonight and really their performance all year. We knew what we were getting into tonight, that's a terrific team and they played like a terrific team."
- "My team is a good team; we certainly did not show that in the first half. I'm certainly disappointed in myself, the staff, and the players. I think it's a huge day for Brown, we love playing in the Governor's Cup and coming down here in a good atmosphere. To really not put our best foot forward is disappointing. I was proud of the guys; I think they responded at halftime and played hard. There are some really good things to build off of but certainly a day that we did not play Brown Football."
- "Lesson learned for us, if you go and play a top-20 team and play at this level, which we aspire to do, you have to put 60 minutes together and if you don't you'll pay dearly. I think our kids will bounce back and be prepared to practice tomorrow because it really is a great group to coach."
Brown closes the non-conference slate next Saturday (Oct. 8) at Central Connecticut State (0-5, 0-2 NEC). Next Saturday's game is set to kickoff at 1 p.m.
