NEW YORK – The Brown men's basketball team defeated Columbia 93-74 Saturday afternoon. The Bears saw four players score in double figures, forced the Lions into 22 turnovers, and recorded a season-high 14 steals.
Tamenang Choh led the Bears with 20 points and eight rebounds. Paxson Wojcik had 15 on 4-of-6 shooting from three, Nana Owusu-Anane put up 12, and Perry Cowan finished with 11. Jaylan Gainey scored eight and added eight rebounds and two blocks. Kimo Ferrari had a game-high four steals.
The Bears recorded 34 points off turnovers and, thanks to 13 offensive rebounds, had 14 second-chance points.
There were six lead changes over the first five minutes of the game as both sides tried to figure the other out. Down 16-13 at the 12:36 mark, the Bears went on a 9-0 run that swung things in their favor for good. A layup by Choh made it 22-16 at 9:48.
Choh scored his first four points of the game during that run and really got going after that. His free throw at 7:39 put Brown up 30-20 and was his ninth point out of the Bears' last 12.
Brown took a 21-point lead, its largest of the first half, when Wojcik hit a three as time expired, putting the Bears up 52-31 at the break. After trailing 16-13 early, Brown outscored Columbia 39-15 during the rest of the first half.
The Bears opened the second half by quickly pushing their lead to 25, their largest of the game, after a steal and a dunk by Cowan.
The closest the Lions would get in the second half was 16 after a quick 7-0 run that had Brown up 79-63 with 4:28 to play, but it was Brown's day as the Bears would push the lead back to 21 after a Kino Lilly Jr. three with 2:47 left.
Sam Klores assisted Josh Watts on a three-pointer that would prove to be the final Brown bucket of the game.
A couple of late free throws by Columbia got the deficit back to 19, but that's where it would end.
The Bears return home next Saturday, Jan. 29 at 4 p.m. to take on Cornell at the Pizzitola Sports Center. Of the remaining eight Ivy League games, Brown will play six at home including the next three in a row.
