Men's swimming and diving falls at Harvard in dual meet

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Ben Hayes picked up a win in the 100 breaststroke but Brown fell to Harvard 84-215 in a dual meet on Tuesday (Jan. 18).
Hayes picked up the lone win for the Bears on the day with a time of 57.19. Vincent Huang was second in the event with a time of 57.38. Reid Arwood (57.88) and Jack Kelly (58.18) finished fifth and sixth, respectively.
"This was a great opportunity to compete against some of the best swimmers and divers in the Ivy League and the nation," said Kevin Norman, Ollie '50 & Kay Patrell Men's Swimming & Diving Coaching Chair. "With three meets this week, we made some adjustments to our lineup today to give people more experience in different events and in doing so, I think we learned a lot about where we are moving forward."
The day started with Zach Le-Nguyen, Huang, Horace Qiao and Jerry O'Mara teaming for a third-place finish in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:32.62.
Andrew Berzolla took fourth in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:29.36. Berzolla was followed by Lukas Scheidl (9:31.78) and Mason Romantic (9:35.43).
In the 200 freestyle, Nathan Depiero was the top finisher for the Bears, touching the wall in 1:42.50. KJ Losee was fourth (1:43.06) followed by Aidan Wilson (1:43.44) and Nicolas Ortega (1:44.10).
Billy Knaul was the top finisher for Brown in the 100 yard backstroke with a fifth place finish (51.59). Qiao (52.06) finished sixth and Kaan Kilinc was seventh (53.81).
The 200 butterfly saw Michael Lincoln take second with a time of 1:51.07 and Tyler Lu took third (1:51.86). Carlos Munoz Renteria (1:53.17) and Le-Nguyen (1:57.63) rounded out the Bears in the event.
A fifth-place finish by Lucas Hess was the best finish for Brown in the 50 free, touching the wall in (21.12). Harrison Powe (21.39), Daniel Alber (21.82) and Marcus Lee (22.03) took sixth through eighth.
On the boards, Trevor Labuda took second on the 3-meter with a score of 348.30. Nicholas Shen (270.00) was fifth and John Byers (240.53) finished sixth. Labuda was third in the 1-meter with 316.80 points. Shen again took fifth (269.93) and Byers was sixth (249.38).
Qiao was fourth in the 100 freestyle, clocking a time of 46.71. O'Mara (47.03), Marcus Lee (47.09) and Depiero (47.60) were the other three finishers for the Bears.
Arwood finished third for the Bears in the 200 backstroke (1:50.91) and Scheidl took fourth (1:52.59). Ortega (1:56.40) and Kilinc (1:56.86) finished sixth and seventh, respectively.
Hayes followed his win the 100 breaststroke with a third-place finish in the 200, touching the wall in 2:02.75. Huang (2:08.15) and Nick Clark (2:20.70) rounded out the top five.
Berzolla was the top finisher in the 500 free for Brown with a time of 4:36.38, followed by Munoz Renteria (4:40.76) and Losee (4:46.50).
In the 100 butterfly, Hess was the top finisher for Brown with a fifth-place time of 50.16. Chris Ma (50.40), Le-Nguyen (51.24) and Alber (51.81) were the next three finishers for the Bears.
Lincoln finished in second in the 200 IM, the final individual event of the day. The senior finished with a time of 1:51.97. Powe was fourth with a time of 1:53.20. Wilson (1:56.77) and Kelly (1:59.03) were seventh and eighth, respectively.
The meet finished with Browns team of Hess, Hayes, Lu and O'Mara taking second in the 400 freestyle relay. The B relay team of Qiao, Ma, Le-Nguyen and Lee were third with a time of 3:07.25.
Brown will have one more dual meet this season, traveling to Cornell on Friday (Jan. 21) and Saturday (Jan. 22).
