Kompelien and Sherman Win Individual Titles as Brown Sweeps Suffolk Short Course Classic

BOSTON, Mass. – Brown cross country started the 2021 season off on a strong note on Friday afternoon with both the men's and women's programs taking home first place at the Suffolk Short Course Classic at Boston's Franklin Park. Senior Emily Kompelien took home the individual title on the women's side, while sophomore Evan Sherman broke the tape on the men's side.
The Bears edged out Ivy League foe Harvard, who finished runner-up in both races.
"It was a really good experience for them just to get back into that environment and be able to race again," assistant coach Kurt Benninger said. "For sure, that was exciting for them, and winning is always good so we won't complain about that result either."
The men's team completed the 5K course in an average time of 15:55, taking five of the top six spots to accumulate 19 points. Making his collegiate cross country debut, Sherman crossed the line first in 15:31.9, averaging just under a five-minute mile at 4:59.9. Senior Griffin McCauley landed on the podium in third place (15:41.9), and was followed by junior Nate Price (4th/15:53.3), senior Ben McCoy (5th/16:12.0), and junior Gabriel Cannavo (6th/16:18.7).
Senior Jared Yabu finished eighth overall in 16:22.0 and sophomore Jesse Edelstein placed 11th out of the 102 finishers to round out Brown's seven runners.
"Our guys went out and executed the plan like we talked about," Benninger said. "We wanted to get them back into the environment and deal with the stresses of a race and give us something tangible that we can build off of since it has been so long. (Sherman) did a great job of that for sure. He ran with a lot of poise and I'm very happy for him."
Brown swept the podium on the women's side, narrowly missing out on a perfect score, taking nine of the first 11 spots overall to finish the 3K race with 17 points. Kompelian picked up the first individual win of her collegiate cross country career by crossing the finish line in 11:06.2. Senior Katherine Dokholyan used a late push to finish runner-up in 11:07.2, and sophomore Tevah Gevelber (11:09.5) took bronze in her first college race. A trio of Brown sophomores followed, with Isa Stronski (11:23.9), Katie Orchard (11:24.7) and Sarah Reichheld (11:28.5) finishing fifth through seventh, respectively.
Senior Mary Bibbey rounded out the Bears' top seven with an ninth place overall time of 11:31.6. Junior Emma Madgic rounded out the overall top 10 with her final time of 11:31.6.
"It was very similar for the women today in terms of the goal in getting back in the racing environment," Benninger said. "Emily (Kompelien) was out front and running well. It was nice to see her back out there. We were also very impressed with Tevah (Gevelber) and were glad to see her finish third in her first meet."
The Bears will race again next Saturday, Sept. 11 in Providence at the Nassaney Invitational.
