Pair of Second Half Goals Lifts Field Hockey to 2-0 Season-Opening Win

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A pair of second half goals from junior Ana Claire Piacentini and sophomore Cameron Kinsella helped lift the Brown field hockey team to a 2-0 season-opening win over Saint Francis (Pa.) on Friday afternoon. For the game, Brown outshot SFU 16-7 and had a 9-2 edge in penalty corners. Junior goaltender Jodie Brine stopped all five shots she faced, while senior Danielle van Rootselaar and junior Lindsey Ross each picked up assists.
"I think we played a little bit careful today, but I was really impressed with the way we changed our approach in the second half," head coach Jill Reeve said. "Our team really responded with making some specific changes and we were playing much more of our game in the second half."
Both teams registered one shot in the first quarter before opening things up in the second. Brown outshot SFU by a 13-4 margin in the second and third quarters, breaking the stalemate early in the third quarter, and adding an insurance goal in the closing moments of the period.
Following a penalty corner, Piacentini found the back of the net in the 32nd minute off an assist from van Rootselaar to give the Bears the 1-0 lead. Brown took advantage of another penalty corner in the final minute when Ross inserted a ball to the top of the arc for Kinsella, who sent a rocket into the bottom right corner of the goal to give Brown a 2-0 cushion with 36 seconds remaining.
The goals by Piacentini and Kinsella were the first points of their collegiate careers, with Kinsella playing in her first college game.
"I think our corner execution was pretty good and Saint Francis has a strong corner defensive unit," Reeve said. "But I think we prepared hard for it and I was glad to have some good execution on our corners.
Brown will return to action this Sunday afternoon when they host Merrimack at Goldberger Family Field at 1 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
