NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Yale (3-3, 1-0 Ivy) scored a pair of goals off penalty corners to take a 2-1 final over Brown (3-4, 0-1 Ivy) in the 2021 Ivy League opener Saturday afternoon at Johnson Field.
Danielle van Rootselaar scored the lone goal for the Bears, her fifth of the season.
"It was a hard-fought match today; the game could have gone either way today." said head coach Jill Reeve. "It was unfortunate to accumulate nine minutes of penalties given the evenness of the match; that certainly impacted our ability to sustain an attack. We did a better job today executing corners but we need to improve our game management in the second half."
Brown controlled most of the play in the opening quarter and broke through on the scoreboard 10 minutes into the period. Van Rootselaar cut between a pair of Bulldogs from the top of the left arc and slotted a backhand shot past Yale goalkeeper Luanna Summer (4 saves) for the early lead.
Yale's first offensive chance came in the final seconds of the quarter as Brown junior Jodi Brine (6 saves) kicked out her first stop of the game.
The Bulldogs got the first offensive chance of the second quarter with less than two minutes on the clock, but Brine made a save during the initial rush and another off a Yale penalty corner to preserve the one-goal lead.
The teams finished the half even with 3 shots on goal apiece while Brown held a 2-1 edge in penalty corners.
The Bulldogs began to push offensively to start the second half and found the equalizer with 2:45 remaining in the third quarter. On Yale's third penalty corner of the quarter, Theodora Dillman collected a loose ball and flipped a shot towards the net, where Ellie Barlow batted it past Brine.
After strong defensive plays on both sides of the field, Yale found the golden goal with 4 minutes to play in regulation. On their fifth penalty corner of the day, Sarah King fired a shot off a pass from Dillman past Brine for the game-winner.
Yale finished the game with a 8-5 advantage in shots on goal and a 6-3 edge in penalty corners.
Brown returns to Goldberger Family Field to host Georgetown (3-5, 0-2 Big East) tomorrow afternoon. The matchup between the Bears and Hoyas is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
