Bears earn wins over Sacred Heart and Hartford on Saturday

Brown won all three matches at the Hartford Invitational in its final tuneup before league play.
WEST HARTFORD, Conn – Brown' offense led the way as the Bears beat Sacred Heart 3-1 and Hartford 3-0 to close out play at the Hartford Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 18).
The Bears finished with three players with double-figure kills in the first match. In the night cap, the offense combined to hit .317 and three Bears again finished with at least 10 kills.
"We haven't been in tight matches a lot this season and it's about making plays when the opportunities are there," said head coach Ahen Kim. "Sacred Heart is a good team and we had to make plays. To do that consistently was a good sign for us. We can take what we have done the last three weekends and build on that as we go into league play."
Match 1 – vs Sacred Heart
Let by Sophia Miller's 19 kills, Brown picked up a very close 3-1 win over Sacred Heart. Three of the four sets were decided by two points and Brown won the match 28-26, 25-21, 24-26, 26-24.
Kayla Griebl and Kate Sheire finished with 13 kills and 11 kills, respectively. Kristin Sellers led the offense with 42 assists.
The Bears defense showed up in the match against the Pioneers, finising with a season-best 17 blocks, led by Zoe Ubamadu who finished with 11 blocks. Sheire added six blocks and Griebl finished the match with five.
Brown also finished with 76 digs, led by 18 from Victoria Vo and 16 from both Sellers and Griebl.
Both teams matched early runs and Sacred Heart took a 13-10 lead before Brown went on a 5-1 run the featured two blocks and an ace to go up 15-14. After the Pioneers tied the set, Brown got kills by Miller and Sheire to increase the lead to 19-15. Brown earned set point from a kill by Sheire but Sacred Heart responded to earn a set point of its own at 25-24.
The Bears fought off two set points before two errors by Sacred Heart gave the Bears the set win.
With set two close midway through, Brown scored six of seven points with kills by Griebl, Vanderlaan and Sellers to take a 20-12 lead. Brown had set point at 24-17 but Sacred Heart held off five set points before Brown got a kill from Miller to end the set.
After dropping a close third set, Brown held a 19-17 lead in set four before the pioneers used a run to take a 21-19 lead. The Bears were down 23-21 but scored three-straight points to go up 24-23. After a Sacred Heart point, kills by Sellers and Griebl ended the match at 26-24.
Match 2 – at Hartford
In the night cap, Brown made easy work of Hartford, beating the Hawks 25-19, 25-8, 25-19. The Bears hit .317 as a team and held Hartford to a .020 hitting percentage, the lowest allowed since the Bears held Hartford to a .000 hitting clip in 2015.
Miller led the team with 11 kills, Griebl and Sheire each had 10, and Vanderlaan finished with eight. Vanderlaan also hit an impressive .412 and three other Bears hit over .333.
Back-to-back blocks early in the set by Sellers and Vanderlaan sparked a 3-0 run to push the lead to 14-7. Two kills by Greibl helped the Bears to a 19-11 lead and after Hartford closed to 22-19, Brown scored three-straight points to win the set.
In set two, Brown hit .476 while holding Hartford to a -.172 hitting clip in the set. After Hartford scored the first point of the set, the Bears rattled off eight-straight points. Up 9-3, Brown used another big run, 8-0, that featured two aces and two kills by Griebl to take full control of the set at 17-3 on route to a 25-8 set win.
Brown used an early 6-0 to take a 9-3 lead in the third and another run with kills by Ubamadu, Sheire and two from Miller to push the lead to 14-7. The Bears got up 22-16 but Hartford scored three points before Brown ended the match with two kills from Miller.
Brown will now turn its attention to the Ivy League, opening up league play at Yale on Friday, Sept. 24 at 7:30 p.m.
