Sheire's career-high leads Brown past Yale in five sets.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – A career-high 21 kills from Kate Sheire gave Brown a five-set win over Yale to begin Ivy League play on Friday (Sept. 24). Beau Vanderlaan and Sierra Miller also finished with double-figure kills in the win.
Brown (8-3, 1-0 Ivy) overcame a Yale lead late in the fifth-set to beat Yale (7-3, 0-1 Ivy) for the first time since 2015. Down 13-12 in the final set, the Bears earned the next three points to take the match.
Sheire led all players with 21 kills and finished with a .413 hitting percentage, committing just two errors in 46 attempts. Vanderlaan added 15 kills for the Bears, hitting .480 and Miller tallied 10 kills while notching a double-double with 13 digs.
Cierra Jenkins guided the offense with 48 assists and also finished with a double-double with 13 digs.
On defense, Victoria Vo led all players with a career-high 34 digs. Kaitlyn Wong added 16 digs as the Bears finished with 89 on the night.
"We were built to overcome these tough situations," said head coach Ahen Kim. "We were able to grit our way out of there. Some of the matches early this season helped us prepare for this. We will go back and address why were in a tough situation but it was good to see us be able to get through it."
Brown dropped the first set 25-19 after the offense struggled out of the block with the Bears hitting just .132 in the first set. Yale hit .308 in the first to take the 1-0 lead.
The offense came alive in the second set with the Bears hitting .417. With the score tied at seven, Brown rattled off three-straight points to jump ahead 10-7. That run was met by a 3-0 run from Yale to knot up the set. A kill by Sheire started Brown's next run that included an ace by Kayla Griebl and was ended with another kill from Sheire to put the Bears up 14-10. Another kill by Sheire increased the lead to 17-12.
Yale got back to within two at 23-21 but the Bears went right back to Sheire for a kill to earn set point. Miller stepped up to close out the set with a kill of her own.
Early kills by Sheire and Jenkins in the third set helped Brown take an 11-9 lead and multiple errors by the Bulldogs helped Brown increase the lead to 19-14. Back-to-back kills by Sheire put Brown up 21-15 and a third kill by the sophomore put the Bears up 23-16. It was Vanderlaan's turn to finish off the set for the offense, collecting two kills and putting Brown up 2-1 in the match.
Yale jumped ahead 5-0 to start the fourth and quickly pushed the lead to 10-3 as the offense struggled for Brown. The Bears hit -.067 in the set as the Bulldogs forced a fifth set with a 25-16 win in the set.
The teams traded points in the fifth set until a kill by Vanderlaan and error by Yale put Brown up 7-5. Yale responded with 5-1 run to take a 10-8 lead after four-straight kills by Bonnie Bostic.
A block by Sheire and Gabby Derrick, followed by an error from Yale tied the set at 10. Griebl then added two aces for to put Brown on top 12-10. Yale looked to have seized the momentum in the set scoring the next three points but a block by Zoe Ubamadu ended the run. Brown got a kill by Vanderlaan to earn match point and Sheire finished off the Bulldogs after a short rally.
Brown will continue Ivy League play on Friday, Oct. 1 with a home match against Cornell. The match against the Big Red will start at 7 p.m. at the Pizzitola Sports Center
