Comeback Bid Falls Short as Men's Soccer Falls to St. Francis Brooklyn

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men's soccer team cut the St. Francis Brooklyn lead to one with a Derek Waleffe penalty goal with four minutes to play in the second half, but the comeback bid fell short as the St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers held on for a 2-1 win over Brown Saturday evening.
"We had another opportunity tonight to see what we are as a team and to show some things," head coach Patrick Laughlin said. "We had some good moments and some not so good moments tonight. We have to keep growing, we have to keep getting better, and we have to keep developing as a group. We have to do a better job overall; we cannot give up two goals per game and expect to be successful. We have to tighten some things up and tomorrow we go back to work."
After a feeling out process to start the second half that saw each team ring iron with shots, the Terriers broke through as Sokol Ymeraj blasted a free kick from just outside the box past Brown goalkeeper Max Waldau.
St. Francis Brooklyn doubled its lead with just over 30 minutes to play in the second half as El Mahdi Youssoufi cut to the Brown net and got his head on the ball in a dive for a highlight reel goal. Ridwan Hannan crossed the ball from right to left for the tally.
The Bear offense ramped up its pressure in need of two goals to tie the game in the final minutes, but it was not until the 86th minute until they got on the board. Jaydon Humphries was whistled for a foul inside the box, giving the penalty to Waffele, who placed the shot in the low left corner of the net as Terrier goalie David Santiago dove to his left.
Brown's offense went all-out in the final minutes looking for the equalizer, but Santiago and the Terrier defense held on, making two key saves in the final two minutes to keep the lead and victory.
The game saw four yellow cards, three of which were assessed to St. Francis Brooklyn. Brown finished the game with a 13-9 advantage in shots and a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Bears also held a slight 10-8 advantage in corner kicks.
Brown returns to action on Wednesday (Sept. 22) as they play host to crosstown rival Providence College. The game is slated to begin at 7 p.m. at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
