BERKELEY, Calif. – Brown and Cal traded first quarter goals and entered the second half tied before Golden Bear junior Rachel Buttinger broke the deadlock in the second half to give Cal the 2-1 home victory Friday night.
Brown drops to 3-2 on the season and drops its first-ever game played in California. The Golden Bears improve to 4-2 on the season.
"I am very proud of our effort tonight; we had to make a few adjustments coming into the match to manage the talent and experience that Cal brings to the table," head coach Jill Reeve said. "We had difficulties generating sustained attack but had some great moments. Our ability to execute our game plan for 60 minutes is a great sign of things to come for our team."
Cal's Anna Van Hoof scored her fourth goal of the season at the four-minute mark of the first quarter to give the Golden Bears the early lead. The graduate student moved through Brown's defense and snuck a low shot under Brown goalkeeper Jodie Brine (4 saves).
Danielle van Rootselaar tied the game with 5:57 to play in the opening quarter, blasting a quick shot off a Brown penalty corner for her third goal of the season. Ana Claire Piacentini and Lindsey Ross picked up assists on the goal.
Brown and Cal played scoreless in a back-and-forth second quarter to enter the half knotted at 1-1. Each team had a scoring opportunity off a penalty corner in the period, but Brine and Cal goalkeeper Lyndsay Swanston (2 saves) made saves to keep the game even.
Cal jumped out of the gates offensively to begin the second half as Buttinger put the Golden Bears up 2-1 less than three minutes into the half with a rebound tally.
Brown was unable to find an offensive spark in the fourth quarter in need of a goal as Cal kept the lead and 2-1 victory.
The Golden Bears finished the game with a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal. Brown held a 4-3 edge in penalty corners.
Brown concludes its West Coast swing Sunday (Sept. 19) at UC Davis (3-3, 0-0 AE), taking on the Aggies at 9 a.m. local time (12 p.m. EDT). Sunday's game will stream on America East TV.
