ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Brown University sailing stands in fifth place after the first day of competition at the 2021 ICSA Team Race National Championship on Wednesday on the Severn River.
Competing for the Walter C. Wood Trophy at the two-day event hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy, the Bears sit in the top half of the 12-team field behind a 7-4 record. Following the initial round robin, the Bears have achieved a top-six place to advance to a second round robin which will then determine the final four round.
In the team standings, Navy (10-1), Georgetown (8-3), Roger Williams (8-3), and College of Charleston (8-3) occupy the top four spots after day one's round robin. Brown holds the fifth-place spot due a head-to-head tiebreaker with sixth-place Stanford (7-4). Brown is competing at the event for the first time as a varsity program.
On day one, the Bears tallied victories over Jacksonville, Stanford, Boston College, Tufts, Tulane, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Brown dropped decisions to Georgetown, Navy, Roger Williams, and Charleston.
Juniors Olivia Belda (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Jack Murphy (Arlington, Mass.), and Tucker Weed (Miami, Fla.) competed as skippers at the event.
Senior Annabelle Hutchinson (Annapolis, Md.) and juniors Maddy McGrath (San Diego, Calif.), Madeleine Montagner (Boston, Mass.), and Emma Montgomery (Winthrop, Mass.) represented Brown as crews on the day.
Brown qualified for the team race national championship after placing third at the New England Championship on April 25. Brown and Boston College are the only two teams in the NEISA to qualify for all three (women's, coed, team race) spring college sailing national championships.
In program history, Brown has registered two third-place finishes – in 1993 and 2013 – at the ICSA Team Race National Championship.
Next, Brown will finish competition at the ICSA Team Race National Championship tomorrow – Thursday, June 3.
Following the team race championship, the Bears will also race at the ICSA Coed National Championship from June 7-8.
