PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University sailing senior Elizabeth Rolfes (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) was recently awarded the Fulbright Scholarship. Brown has ranked among the top student Fulbright producers in the U.S. for the past five years, earning the highest spot on the list in 2016, 2017 and 2018 and the No. 2 rank in 2019 and 2020.
Founded in 1946, the Fulbright program promotes international peace through intellectual and cultural exchange. Applicants are selected based upon their academic and professional records, the quality and achievability of their proposals, and their capacity to engage culturally with their host communities.
Rolfes and the sailing team enjoyed a successful spring in the program's first year as a varsity sport. The team finished fourth at the ICSA Women's National Championship, sixth at the ICSA Team Race National Championship, and 11th at the ICSA Coed National Championship. The Bears also won the New England Women's Championship and New England Coed Championship, while placing third at the New England Team Race Championship.
The program funds approximately 2,000 recent college graduates and current graduate students to teach and research for a full academic year in 140 countries around the world. This year's selection process was particularly competitive, with many applicants from last year reapplying because the COVID-19 pandemic caused their host institutions to alter their 2020–21 award structures, or cancel them entirely.
