
Women’s Crew Sends All Three Boats to A/B Semis out of Friday Heats

SARASOTA, Fla. – Brown University women's crew advanced all three of its boats – the first varsity eight, second varsity eight, and varsity four – directly to the A/B semifinals out of Friday's heats to open the first day of racing at the 2021 NCAA Division I Women's Rowing Championships at Nathan Benderson Park.
Making its 24th consecutive appearance at the NCAA Championships, all three of Brown's boats placed second in their heats to proceed directly to Saturday's A/B semifinals and bypass Friday evening's repechage racing.
All three boats have secured at least a top-12 finish in their respective events as the A/B semifinals allow for boats to move to the petite or grand finals and finish in places 1-12. In the first varsity eight, Brown is guaranteed to finish higher than its No. 17 seed.
Brown stood as one of seven schools to send all three of its boats from the heats directly to the A/B semifinals. The other six included Michigan, Ohio State, Stanford, Texas, Virginia, and Washington. Following repechage racing, 10 schools qualified all three boats for the A/B semifinals. California, Rutgers, and Syracuse joined the seven teams that qualified directly out of the heats.

The top three boats in each A/B semifinal advance to their respective grand finals while the rest proceed to their respective petite finals. The top three crews in each C/D semifinal qualify for the C final while the remaining crews compete in the D final.

In Brown's first race of the day, Brown's 17th-seeded first varsity eight placed second in heat one out of lane one with a time of 6:22.956, advancing directly to Saturday's A/B semifinals. The Bears topped No. 8 seed California (6:23.838) by 0.882 seconds, No. 9 seed Princeton (6:28.384) by 5.428 seconds, and No. 16 seed Tennessee (6:33.626) by 10.670 seconds. No. 1 seed Texas won the race with a time of 6:15.586 – 7.370 seconds ahead of Brown.
The Bears are already guaranteed to better their No. 17 seed based on reaching the A/B semifinals which allows for boats to move to the petite or grand finals and finish in places 1-12. Brown also already bettered its finish from 2018 – the last time NCAAs was in Sarasota – when the Bears came in 13th in the 1V8.

No. 1 seed Washington captured the race in 6:25.444 – 8.698 seconds ahead of Brown.
The Bears' seventh-seeded varsity four finished second in heat two out of lane four with a time of 7:14.346, moving directly to Saturday's A/B semifinals. Brown defeated No. 10 seed Princeton (7:20.680) by 6.334 seconds, No. 15 seed Tennessee (7:34.082) by 19.736 seconds, and No. 18 seed Gonzaga (7:40.490) by 26.144 seconds. No. 2 seed Texas claimed the race in 7:03.718 – finishing 10.628 seconds ahead of Brown.
In advancing all three boats directly to the A/B semifinals out of the heats, Brown sits ahead of where it stood after day one in 2018 – the last time NCAAs was at Nathan Benderson Park. In 2018, all three of the Bears boats competed in the repechage races with the 2V8 and V4 advancing to the A/B semifinals.
