
Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month 2021: Austin Hwang ’18, Men’s Water Polo

Throughout the month of May, Brown Athletics will celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month through a series of profiles. Over the course of the month, the Bears will recognize Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders who have made an impact on the university community and beyond.
Austin Hwang '18, Men's Water Polo
Austin Hwang helped the Bears achieve a stretch of tremendous team success, including winning the 2014 Collegiate Water Polo Association championship. That 2014 championship marked the Bears first CWPA title since 1985 and allowed the Bears to make their first appearance at the NCAA Championships since 1990. Hwang played as part of a team that won three consecutive regular season conference championships – claiming the NCWPA Northern Division regular season titles in 2014 and 2015 prior to winning the inaugural NWPC regular season title in 2016. The Bears also captured the CWPA Northern Division tournament titles in 2014 and 2015. As a player, Hwang totaled 53 goals, 35 assists, 88 points, and 60 steals over his career, including 27 goals, eight assists, 35 points, and 26 steals as a senior in 2017. During his four years at Brown from 2014-17, the Bears posted a 94-35 overall record (.729 winning percentage) with 21 or more wins in each of those four seasons.
