Men’s Crew Set for 2021 IRA National Championships

Schedule Update: As of Thursday, May 27 at 7:00 p.m., Friday's time trial has been moved up one hour and will begin at 7:00 a.m. on Friday, May 28.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University men's crew is set to race at the 2021 Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championships at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J., from May 28-29.

IN THE HISTORY BOOKS
Brown men's crew has a long history of competition and success at the IRA National Championships including seven gold medals in the first varsity eight in 1979, 1983, 1986, 1987, 1993, 1994, and 1995. The Bears most recently reached the medal stand in the first varsity eight in 2014, capturing silver.

TIME TRIALS
For Friday's morning time trials, Brown's first varsity eight will race out of position eight and launch at 8:03:30 a.m. The Bears' second varsity eight will begin out of position 38 – as the seventh second varsity eight to launch – at 8:43:00 a.m. Brown's third varsity eight will race out of position 64 – sixth among third varsity eights – at 9:22:30 a.m.

IN THE POLLS
In the latest IRCA Men's Heavyweight Varsity Eight rankings from May 19, Brown stands at No. 8 in the nation. The top seven includes No. 1 Washington, No. 2 California, No. 3 Syracuse, No. 4 Princeton, No. 5 Northeastern, No. 6 Wisconsin, and No. 7 Boston University. No. 9 Stanford and No. 10 Dartmouth round out the top 10. Other Ivies in the poll include No. 15 Cornell and No. 17 Penn.

REGATTA FORMAT
For the 2021 regatta, the first varsity eight will feature 31 entries, the second varsity eight will feature 27 entries, the third varsity eight will feature 18 entries, and the varsity four will feature 17 entries. The 2021 regatta format will feature time trials on Friday morning (May 28), semifinals on Friday afternoon (May 28), and finals on Saturday morning (May 29).

PROGRESSIONS
From the time trials, the top 18 boats will advance to the A/B/C semifinals while the remaining crews will progress to the D/E semifinals. In the A/B/C semis, the top two boats from each semi will advance to the grand final, places three and four will move to the petite final, and places five and six will progress to the third-level final. For the D/E semis, the top two boats will advance to the fourth-level final while the remainder will move to the fifth-level final.

SPRING 2021 RECAP
After receiving approval to compete on April 2, Brown raced twice this spring with the first varsity eight, second varsity eight, and third varsity eight all posting 2-1 records. The Bears topped both Holy Cross and Trinity on April 17 before falling to Northeastern on May 8.
