ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Brown University sailing stands in sixth place with a score of 159 after the first day of competition at the 2021 ICSA Women's National Championship on Wednesday on the Severn River.
Competing for the Gerald C. Miller Trophy at the two-day event hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy in a single round robin format, the Bears sit in the top third of the 18-team field with 10 of the regatta's 18 races completed. Brown – in its first year as a varsity program in 2020-21 – won the 2019 women's national title.
In the team standings, Brown sits 12 points behind fifth-place Navy (147) and 19 points behind fourth-place Stanford (140), while also trailing third-place Tulane (137), fourth-place Charleston (128), and first-place Boston College (101). The Bears lead seventh-place Hobart and William Smith (162) by three points and also stand above 11 other schools.
Brown's A Division entry stands in ninth place in its division with a score of 97 that includes a second-place finish in race 7A. The Bears' B Division entry holds second place in its division behind a score of 62 that includes first-place finishes in races 5B and 9B and second-place showings in races 2B and 7B.
Junior Olivia Belda (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and senior Annabelle Hutchinson (Annapolis, Md.) represented Brown in the A division while sophomore Caroline Bayless (Annapolis, Md.) and junior Maddy McGrath (San Diego, Calif.) competed for Brown in the B division.
Junior Madeleine Montagner (Boston, Mass.), junior Emma Montgomery (Winthrop, Mass.), and senior Elizabeth Rolfes (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) served the Bears as reserves.
Brown qualified for the women's national championship after winning the New England Championship on April 17. The Bears also captured the NEISA Coed Championship and placed third at the NEISA Team Race Championship, qualifying for nationals based on those results. Brown and Boston College are the only two teams in the NEISA to qualify for all three (women's, coed, team race) spring college sailing national championships.
In program history, Brown has won five ICSA Women's National Championships, coming in 1985, 1988, 1989, 1998, and 2019. Overall, the Bears have finished in the top three at the women's national championships 13 times. That number includes seven runner-up finishes (1986, 1987, 1990, 1991, 1997, 2008, 2016) and one third-place finish in 2015.
Next, Brown will finish competition at the ICSA Women's National Championship tomorrow – Thursday, May 20.
Following the women's championship, the Bears will also race at the ICSA Team Race National Championship (June 2-3) and the ICSA Coed National Championship (June 7-8).
