
Track & Field Resumes Competition at the Ocean State Invitational

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men's and women's track & field teams opened the 2021 outdoor season at the Ocean State Invitational on Friday night at Ray Treacy Track. A total of 11 men's teams and 12 women's programs competed in the invitational.
Four Brown squads competed in the 4x100m relay to start the evening with freshman John McNeil (Medfield, Mass.), freshman Jack Kelley (Lake Oswego, Ore.), senior Kevin Boyce (Columbus, Ohio) and senior Obi Ifediora (Verona, Wis.) leading the pack with a time of 42.91. The women also had multiple quartets racing, with junior Lauren Stern (Mahwah, N.J.), senior Gracie Whelan (Charlotte, N.C.), freshman Brooke Ury (Newcastle, Wash.) and freshman Emma Gallant (Windham, Maine) recording the top time (48.86).
Junior Calvin Perkins (Belmont, Mass.) next won the 400m with a time of 49.26. Freshman Stephanie Kriss (Highland Park, Ill.) soon after paced the Bears in the 800m with a third-place finish from her 2:15.73 time.
In sprints, Brown went 1-2-3 in the 100m with senior Tim McDonough (Rocky River, Ohio) claiming first with a 11.30 while Kelley (11.31) and freshman Marcus Gillespie (Dayton, Ohio) (11.55) followed. The women had similar luck with Whelan grabbing the top spot in 12.32 and junior Maddie Frey (Waukesha, Wis.) taking second in 12.39.
The mile run saw junior Emily Kompelien (Edina, Minn.) lead the Bears with a time of 4:52.28 to claim eighth while freshman Isa Stronski (Bronxville, N.Y.) was close behind in 10th (4:53.62). On the men's side, senior David Scherrer (Virginia Beach, Va.) recorded a time of 4:11.87 to finish 11th overall.
Senior Ally Hajda (Atlantic Beach, Fla.) was fourth in the 5000m with a time of 16:53.86 while senior Dominic Morganti (Syracuse, N.Y.) took eighth in the event with a time of 14:38.23.
In the final event of the night, the 3000m, freshman Evan Sherman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) registered a third-place showing with a time of 8:26.09 while sophomore Nate Price (Edinboro, Pa.) grabbed fifth in 8:35.28. Freshman Emily Faulhaber (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) also finished fourth in 9:58.56.
