PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University women's crew swept all four races from the University of Rhode Island in its season opener on Saturday afternoon on the Seekonk River as Brown Athletics made its return, competing for the first time since March 11, 2020.
"Today was the first opportunity to race in over a year for both teams, and their intensity and emotion was readily apparent," Brown head coach John Murphy said. "Our tremendous thanks to the URI and Brown administrators for making it possible."
Saturday's race against URI marked a span of 388 days since Brown Athletics last competed – a 13-11 win for the women's lacrosse team over Virginia Tech on March 11, 2020.
"It was so exciting to be racing again," junior Beate Kaz said. "It was also exciting to be the first Brown competition. When I was in the training room yesterday, all the trainers were talking about it, and this morning our men's team made posters for us. We have a lot of pre-race traditions – we didn't forget about them, but we almost did because we haven't done them in two years. Every little part building up to the race felt so great to be doing again."
Brown women's crew competed for the first time since the Princeton Chase on October 27, 2019 – a span of 524 days. The Bears raced in the spring season for the first time since the NCAA Championships on June 2, 2019 – a span of 671 days – and raced at home on the Seekonk River for the first time since May 4, 2019 – a span of 700 days.
"With the uncertainty of this past year, we really are trying not to take any moment at the boathouse for granted," Kaz said. "We are all so thankful to be back there. Every practice, every time we can put the oar in the water is a blessing for us. We are really trying to take that to its full advantage."
In the final race of the day, Brown's first varsity eight finished with a time of 5:53, beating Rhode Island (6:11) by 18 seconds.
"We do try to have tunnel vision on race day," Kaz said. "There was a lot of excitement, but when we got on the water, that excitement turned into focus. We've been training for so long in basements or on our own at home. To be able to show everything we've done was really amazing."
In the afternoon's penultimate race, the Bears' second varsity eight came in with a time of 6:15, topping URI (6:33) by 18 seconds.
In the first NCAA event of the day, Brown's A varsity four clocked a time of 6:51, besting the Rams (7:34) by 43 seconds.
Opening the day with the B/C varsity four event, Brown's B boat took first place with a time of 7:45, eclipsing URI's B entry (8:35) by 50 seconds. The Bears' C boat finished in second place at 7:50, topping the Rams' B entry by 45 seconds and URI's C entry (8:57) by 67 seconds. Brown's D boat finished the race in third place with a time of 8:00, topping URI's B and C boats by 35 and 57 seconds respectively.
Brown and URI met for the first time since April 13, 2013. The Bears and Rams met for four straight seasons from 2010-13 with Brown taking all 17 races from Rhode Island.
Brown became the second Ivy League institution to compete in intercollegiate athletics this academic year, joining the University of Pennsylvania.
"We were excited to show that Brown crew is back, and racing is what we do," Kaz said. "It felt so great to be able to do it again."
