NEW LONDON, Conn. – Brown University sailing placed third at the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association (NEISA) Team Race Championship on Sunday on the Thames River, qualifying for the ICSA Team Race National Championship.
Racing for the Fowle Trophy in Z420s with the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and Connecticut College co-hosting, the Bears qualified for the Intercollegiate Sailing Association Team Race National Championship – June 2-3 in Annapolis, Md., with the U.S. Naval Academy hosting – based on their finish at the New England Team Race Championship.
Last weekend, the Bears won both the NEISA Women's Championship and NEISA Coed Championship following a 13-month hiatus from competition. Brown earned spots in the ICSA Women's National Championship and ICSA Coed National Championship based on its victories.
On Sunday, Brown placed third behind a 7-5 record with Roger Williams University (9-3) taking first place and Boston College (8-4) coming in second. Tufts University and USCGA both also posted 7-5 records, but the Bears held the tiebreaker based on a 3-1 mark against those schools.
The Bears posted a 5-1 record in round one, defeating Rhode Island, Tufts, USCGA, BC, and Conn. College while falling to RWU. Brown notched a 2-4 mark in round two, topping USCGA and Conn. College while dropping decisions to URI, Tufts, BC, and RWU.
Juniors Olivia Belda (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Jack Murphy (Arlington, Mass.), and Tucker Weed (Miami, Fla.) represented the Bears as skippers while senior Annabelle Hutchinson (Annapolis, Md.) and juniors Emma Montgomery (Winthrop, Mass.), Maddy McGrath (San Diego, Calif.), and Madeleine Montagner (Boston, Mass.) represented Brown as crews.
Earlier in the weekend, Brown defeated URI on Saturday in its first home event as a varsity program, sailing out of the Ted Turner '60 Sailing Pavilion and Edgewood Yacht Club on Narragansett Bay.
