BRISTOL, R.I. – Brown University sailing topped Roger Williams University in a team race regatta in Flying Juniors (FJs) on Saturday afternoon on Mount Hope Bay as Brown prepares for the ICSA National Championships later this spring.
The Bears and Hawks each fielded two entries at the event with Bears 1 taking first place with a 7-2 record. RWU's two entries came in second and third with 6-3 and 3-6 marks respectively. Bears 2 rounded out the field with a 2-7 record.
The event featured this spring's two New England Champions as Brown won the NEISA Women's and Coed Championships while RWU captured the New England Team Race Championship.
Bears 1 included the combinations of sophomore Caroline Bayless (Annapolis, Md.) and junior Madeleine Montagner (Boston, Mass.); juniors Jack Murphy (Arlington, Mass.) and Maddy McGrath (San Diego, Calif.); and juniors Tucker Weed (Miami, Fla.) and Emma Montgomery (Winthrop, Mass.).
Earlier this season over the weekend of April 17-18 – Brown's first weekend of competition as a varsity program – the Bears won both the NEISA Women's Championship and NEISA Coed Championship following a 13-month hiatus from competition. Brown earned spots in the ICSA Women's National Championship and ICSA Coed National Championship based on its victories.
Last weekend, the Bears topped the University of Rhode Island on April 24 in their first home race as a varsity program before placing third at the NEISA Team Race Championship on April 25, qualifying for a spot at the ICSA Team Race National Championship.
Brown and Boston College are the only two teams in the NEISA to qualify for all three (women's, coed, team race) spring college sailing national championships. The ICSA Women's National Championship is May 19-20, the ICSA Team Race National Championship is June 2-3, and the ICSA Coed National Championship is June 7-8. All three championships will take place in Annapolis, Md.
