Sailing Defeats Rhode Island in First Home Event as Varsity Program

CRANSTON, R.I. – Brown University sailing defeated the University of Rhode Island in its first home event as a varsity program on Saturday afternoon, sailing out of the Ted Turner '60 Sailing Pavilion and Edgewood Yacht Club on Narragansett Bay.

Competing in a 3-on-3 team race regatta format in Z420s, Bears 1 finished with a 5-1 record for first place, topping Rams 1 which came in second place behind a 4-2 record. Bears 2 took third place behind a 2-4 mark, besting Rams 2 which finished 1-5 for fourth place.

Bears 1 went 3-0 in round one and 2-1 in round two while Bears 2 finished 1-2 in round 1 and 1-2 in round 2.

For Bears 1, juniors Olivia Belda (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Jack Murphy (Arlington, Mass.), and Tucker Weed (Miami, Fla.) served as skippers while seniors Annabelle Hutchinson (Annapolis, Md.) and Jack Papetti (Westwood, Mass.) and juniors Emma Montgomery (Winthrop, Mass.), Maddy McGrath (San Diego, Calif.), and Madeleine Montagner (Boston, Mass.) acted as crews.

For Bears 2, senior Elizabeth Rolfes (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) and sophomores Hunter Zonnenberg (Marblehead, Mass.) and Caroline Bayless (Annapolis, Md.) served as skippers while seniors Justin Chiang (New York, N.Y.) and Catherine McClenahan (Buffalo, N.Y.), junior Mo Liu (Beijing, China), and sophomores Isabel Cox (Wilmette, Ill.) and Nora Ong (Saunderstown, R.I.) acted as crews.

Next, Brown will race at the New England Team Race Championship tomorrow – Sunday, April 25 – on the Thames River in New London, Conn., with the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and Connecticut College hosting the event sailed in Z420s. The top three teams will qualify for the ICSA Team Race National Championship.

Last weekend, the Bears won both the NEISA Women's Championship and NEISA Coed Championship following a 13-month hiatus from competition. Brown earned spots in the ICSA Women's National Championship and ICSA Coed National Championship based on its victories.
