Sailing Captures New England Coed Championship

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Brown University sailing captured the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association (NEISA) Coed Championship on Sunday on the Thames River, completing its first weekend of competition as a varsity program with back-to-back New England titles.

Racing for the Coast Guard Alumni Bowl in Flying Juniors (FJs), the Bears qualified for the ICSA Coed National Championship – set for June 7-8 in Annapolis, Md., and hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy – based on their first-place finish. In 2019, Brown placed fifth at the ICSA Coed National Championship.

Yesterday, Brown won the NEISA Women's Championship, qualifying for the ICSA Women's Championship. The U.S. Coast Guard Academy and Connecticut College co-hosted both New England Championships this weekend.

On Sunday, Brown took first place behind a team score of 82 with a score of 42 from the A division and score of 40 from the B division. The Bears' A division entry won races 3 and 4 while Brown's B division entry claimed the top spot in race 7 over the course of the right-race rotation.

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy placed second with a score of 85, and Roger Williams University came in third with a score of 92 out of the eight-team field.

Juniors Jack Murphy (Arlington, Mass.) and Maddy McGrath (San Diego, Calif.), represented the Bears in the A division while junior Olivia Belda (Sao Paulo, Brazil), senior Annabelle Hutchinson (Annapolis, Md.), and junior Emma Montgomery (Winthrop, Mass.) represented Brown in the B division. Juniors Madeleine Montagner (Boston, Mass.) and Tucker Weed (Miami, Fla.) acted as reserves for the Bears.

Yesterday – Saturday, April 17 – the Bears won the New England Women's Championship in their debut as a varsity program. Brown qualified for a spot at the ICSA Women's National Championship from May 19-20 in Annapolis, Md., based on its first-place finish.
