3/31/2021 9:50:00 AM | Men's Crew
Brown University athletics will be recognizing its spring senior student-athletes throughout the months of March, April, May, and June. Senior student-athletes will be featured during the week on Brownbears.com and various social media platforms.
Name: Thomas Phelps
Hometown: London, England
Sport: Men's Crew
Concentration: History and Political Science
Accolades: Won a bronze medal with the first varsity eight at the Eastern Sprints in 2018 … Gained bronze in the Championship Eight at the Head of the Charles in 2018 and 2019 … Raced with the first varsity eight at the IRA National Championships in 2018 and 2019 … Competed at the Henley Royal Regatta in 2018.
Favorite experience as a Brown student-athlete:
My favorite experience as a Brown student-athlete was beating Harvard in the dual racing season my freshman year. There were tons of alumni back to watch the race, and the final stretch of the racecourse was really loud. We snapped a losing streak against them, and it really gave us a lot of confidence as a crew for the rest of that season.
Plans after graduation:
I have applied to graduate programs back in the UK. I am also planning to carry on rowing, whether for a university or club.
The best part of being on your team is:
The camaraderie and brotherhood with everyone else on the team. From my first moment on campus the upperclassmen immediately made me feel extremely welcome here. The people involved with Brown Crew are really amazing, from coaches to alumni to teammates. I will never forget the experiences I have had and the characters I have met.
Favorite spot on campus:
Other than the locker room at Marston Boathouse, I think the Main Green is beautiful. It's at its best on the first warm and sunny day of the spring.
