Throughout the month of February, Brown Athletics will celebrate Black History Month through a series of profiles. Over the course of the month, the Bears will recognize African Americans who have made an impact on the university community and beyond.
Tivon Abel '98, Wrestling
A three-time First Team All-Ivy honoree, two-time Eastern champion, and 1998 NCAA All-American, Tivon Abel '98 capped his Brown wrestling career with a fifth-place finish at 158 pounds at the 1998 NCAA Championships. The 1998 winner of Brown's Fritz Pollard Award, given to the Bears' most outstanding male varsity athlete of the year, Abel earned First Team All-Ivy in 1995, 1997 and 1998 while gaining Honorable Mention All-Ivy honors in 1994. He won back-to-back Eastern titles in 1997 and 1998 and earned recognition as the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the 1997 Eastern Championships. Abel qualified for the NCAA Championships three times. With his fifth-place finish in 1998, he became Brown's third All-American and remains one of just four All-Americans in program history. Following graduation, Abel earned a master's degree from Portland State University and an MBA from George Fox University. He is an accomplished educator who has taught at a variety of levels from elementary to college.
