COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Brown men's basketball team fell to Maryland 81-67 Thursday evening at the XFINITY Center. The Bears led their Big Ten opponent by four at the half, but the Terrapins had a big second half on both ends of the floor to claim the win.
"They have some experienced, veteran, talented players," head coach Mike Martin said of the Terrapins. "They made some plays and you have to credit them. While we would have loved to have been a little bit more consistent defensively, I thought in the first half we were locked in. In the second half, we had too many breakdowns. Even when we didn't break down, those guys are really good players."
Tamenang Choh led the Bears with 25 points, one short of tying his career high, and added seven rebounds and a pair of assists. Kino Lilly Jr. had 17 points and three assists, while Jaylan Gainey had 10 points and three blocks and Paxson Wojcik contributed a career-high nine rebounds.
Brown shot 50% from the field in the first half, while holding the Terrapins to a 37% showing, but the roles were reversed in the second half as Maryland shot 60% and the Bears fell to 31.3%.
A back and forth first ten minutes of the game saw Choh and Gainey combine for 18 of the Bears' first 20 points. Brown would push its lead to four multiple times throughout the first half before taking its largest lead of the game with 2:16 left in the frame. Choh made a bucket and followed with a free throw to put the Bears up seven at 35-28. The free throw brought Choh's first-half point total to 18.
A few more buckets by each side brought the halftime score to 39-35, as the Bears would go into the break leading Power Five Maryland by four.
Brown would go up by six at the 16:47 mark of the second half after a Choh three, but the Terrapins would score the next 13 points to lead 52-45 at 12:40. From that point on, the Bears would not get within five, which came at 11:59 after a Friday layup.
Maryland's Eric Ayala would score 15 of his team-high 22 in the second half, while URI transfer Fatts Russell and Hakim Hart both contributed 11 during the final 20 minutes.
A three by Lilly at 3:58 cut Maryland's lead to eight, but the Terrapins would score eight of the final 10 points of the game to elimante the Bears' chance for a comeback.
Brown now turns its attention to Ivy League play as the Bears open the conference portion of their slate on Jan. 2 at Penn. Tip will be at 3 p.m. in Brown's first game of 2022.
