Bears sweep Princeton for third-straight win

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Led by a solid offensive outing and strong defense, Brown swept Princeton on Friday (Nov. 5). The win moves the Bears one step closer to clinching an Ivy League title.
With the win over the Tigers, Brown (17-4, 10-1 Ivy), remains in first place in the Ivy League and holds a two-game lead over Yale with three games left on the schedule. The win also marks the most wins in program history since 1998 and the first time the Bears have beaten Princeton twice in a season in program history. Since dropping a five-set match to Yale, Brown has now won nine-straight sets.
The Bears hit .267 on offense against a defense that came into the matchup allowing the lowest hitting percentage in the league. Brown hit the second-highest percentage that Princeton had allowed all season, besting its own hitting clip of .255 in the first meeting between the two teams.
Sophia Miller was the only Bear to finish in double-figures with 11 kills and the junior hit .265. Beau Vanderlaan and Kate Sheire each ahd nine kills with Vanderlaan hitting .429 and Sheire hitting .280. Cierra Jenkins posted a double-double with 32 assists and 13 digs.
Defense played a big role in the match for Brown as the Bears finished the match with 11 blocks to just four for Princeton and tallied 58 digs, holding the Tigers to .136 hitting.
Set one was tight with the teams tied at 11 before Brown got things rolling. With the help of two errors by Princeton and a kill from Jenkins, Brown began a run. After a point from Princeton, two kills from Miller, one from Sheire and a block by Sheire and Gabby Derrick put Brown up 18-12.
Princeton cut the lead to three twice but Brown kept the Tigers at bay finishing off the set with a kill by Sheire, ace by Kaitlyn Wong and block by Jilienne Widener to end the set.
The two teams traded runs to start the second set with score locked at 13. Miller picked up a kill to start a run for the Bears. A kill by Derrick and block from Sheire and Derrick was part of a 6-0 to push the lead to 19-13. Princeton cut the lead to three again but a kill by Vanderlaan and two errors from the Tigers gave Brown set point.
Princeton made things interesting with four-straight points but a kill by Miller put the Bears up 2-0.
Kills from Widener and Vanderlaan and a block by Jenkins helped Brown take an early 10-6 lead. Princeton cut the lead to 13-10 but two kills by Vanderlaan led a rally that made the score 16-10. The Bears lead got to seven at 21-14 after back-to-back kills by Miller. A kill from Widener and block by Derrick and Sheire gave Brown match point.
The crowd at Pizzitola Sports Center had to wait two points but Widener finished off the match with a kill to give the Bears the sweep.
Brown will finish up its home slate of its schedule with a match against Penn on Saturday, Nov. 6. The match against the Quakers will begin at 5 p.m.
