Volleyball continues winning ways with sweep at Harvard

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Brown volleyball set the school record for Ivy League wins in a season with a 3-0 win over Harvard on Friday (Nov. 12). The Bears have now won 12 league games, breaking the record set back in 2001.
Brown (19-4, 12-1 Ivy) had its offense rolling as the team hit .256 on its way to a 25-21,25-14,25-10 win against Harvard (10-12, 7-6). No Bear reached double figure kills for the second time this season but Sophia Miller and Cierra Jenkins (.500 hitting percentage) led the way with seven kills. Beau Vanderlaan finished the match with six kills and hit a team-high .625. Gabby Derrick added five kills and both Jilienne Widener and Kate Sheire each had four.
Jenkins stuffed the stat sheet against the Crimson with 23 assists, eight digs and a block.
"We had a fantastic night on defense finishing with 12 blocks and outdigging them," said assistant coach Taylor Virtue. "Offensively, Cierra had her best offensive night of the season and really quaterbacked a great game as our setter."
Miller finished the match tied with Victoria Vo, leading the team with 11 digs. The Bears finished with 40 digs and 12 blocks on the night, holding Harvard to -.022 hitting. Derrick led the way at the net with seven blocks, while Vanderlaan and Sheire each collected five.
Brown fell behind early in the first set 14-9 but battled back using a 4-1 later in the set to tie the set at 18. The run featured a block by Jenkins and Vanderlaan and kills from Widener and Miller. Down by one at 21-20, Brown got a point off a Harvard service error and an ace from Miller. After a Harvard point, three errors by the Crimson and a block by Vanderlaan and Widener gave the Bears the set.
After hitting .167 in the first set, Brown upped that number to .296 in set two. The Bears also held Harvard to -.033 hitting in the second frame. Harvard pulled within one at 6-5 but Brown picked up three points after two errors and a kill by Vanderlaan. For the rest of the set, every time Harvard picked up a point, Brown responded with short runs. A 3-0 run by Brown with kilsl from Jenkins and Widener put the Bears up 13-8.
Blocks by Derrick and Miller and Sheire and Derrick increased the lead to 17-10. Up 21-14, Brown got a kill from Vanderlaan and after an error by the Crimson, Widener finished off the set with two service aces.
The third set was all Brown with the Bears hitting .348 and keeping Harvard to -.167. Brown used a 5-0 run to jump ahead 7-2. Jenkins and Vanderlaan each had two kills during a 5-1 run that made the score 15-6. Up 17-9, Brown used four blocks with Derrick contributing on all four, to earn match point with a 7-0 run. The match ended with Sheire picking up a kill, giving Brown its fifth-straight 3-0 win.
Brown will finish up the regular season with a road contest against Dartmouth on Saturday (Nov. 13) at 5 p.m.
