Volleyball takes down Cornell in three sets

ITHACA, N.Y. – Brown volleyball cruised to a three-set win over Cornell, beating the Big Red 25-21, 25-17, 25-15, on Saturday night (Oct. 30).
Kate Sheire led the Bears offense with 13 kills and Beau Vanderlaan tallied 11. Sheire was stellar on the attack with a .591 hitting percentage, committing no errors in 22 attacks. Vanderlaan finished the night with a .417 hitting clip as the Bears hit .336 overall. Cierra Jenkins guided the offense with 30 assists.
Brown held a 6-1 advantage at the service line over Cornell. Victoria Vo finished the game with two aces and four other Bears each picked up an ace.
On defense, Brown held Cornell to .197 hitting and led the match in both digs (52-46) and blocks (4-3). Vo and Jenkins each finished with 12 digs and Sheire led the Bears with three blocks.
"It was a great job by Cierra to pace the game," said head coach Ahen Kim. "Each set we were hitting a higher number and that was Cierra giving all of our hitters good opportunities. Our whole team did a good job playing defense and making it hard for Cornell to score points. Just a good team effort tonight.
Brown jumped on Cornell early taking a 7-3 lead after a couple of errors by Cornell and a kill by Jilienne Widener. Cornell pulled within two multiple times in the set but after a kill by Vanderlaan and one from Jenkins, Brown increased the lead to 19-14. Up 23-20, Sheire added finished off the set with two kills.
Back-to-back errors put Brown ahead 5-1 to start the second set. A block by Vanderlaan and Widener followed by another block by Vanderlaan and Sheire increased the lead to 8-2. A 4-0 run that featured kills by Widener and Vanderlaan blew open the set with the Bears up 13-5. Cornell would not get closer than six the rest of the way as Sophia Miller and Sheire finished off the set with kills.
A 7-2 run started the third set as Brown was well on its way to its second-straight sweep. Kills by Sheire, Vanderlaan and Jenkins led a run that put Brown up 17-7. The Bears got kills by Kaitlyn Wong and Vanderlaan to go up 23-12. Cornell scored three-straight points but a kill from Vanderlaan gave the Bears match point. Widener finished the match off with an ace.
Brown will return home for its last two home matches of the season with matches against Princeton on Friday (Nov. 5) and Penn on Saturday (Nov. 6).
