PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The 18th-ranked Princeton Tigers (9-7, 5-1 Ivy) scored a goal in the second, third, and fourth quarters to take a 3-0 conference win over the Brown Bears (6-10, 2-4 Ivy) Saturday afternoon at Goldberger Family Field.
"I thought we played well today and our defense played an excellent game, but I know we have another level of play available to us," said head coach Jill Reeve. "I hope we exercise that level next week."
Prior to the start of the match, Brown honored its three seniors: Amanda Cooper, Emma Rosen, and Danielle van Rootselaar. These members of the Class of 2022 were honored for their contributions to the Brown field hockey program over the last four years.
The first quarter ended scoreless with chances on both sides of the field. Princeton had a pair of penalty corner chances, the only corners of the game for the Tigers, but Jodie Brine (4 saves) turned aside the lone shot faced on the corners.
Brown had one penalty corner opportunity in the opening 15 minutes, but van Rootselaar's shot whistled wide.
The Tigers broke the deadlock late in the second quarter after a penalty stroke was awarded. Sam Davidson fired a shot to Brine's right for the opening tally.
Claire Donovan doubled Princeton's lead three minutes into the third quarter, setting up on the far post and tapping in a pass from Sammy Popper.
Princeton added an insurance marker 2:29 into the fourth quarter as Ali McCarthy tipped a long distance shot from Hannah Davey through traffic and into the net.
While penalty corner opportunities were few and far between, each team received two in the game. Princeton held an 11-5 advantage in shots and a 7-3 edge in shots on goal. Princeton goalkeeper Isla Okkinga recorded three saves in her first career shutout.
Brown closes the 2021 season next Saturday (Nov. 6) on the road to take on the 11th-ranked Harvard Crimson (14-1, 6-0 Ivy). Next Saturday's game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in Cambridge and will stream on ESPN+.
