NEW YORK – Brown got back in the win column with a 3-0 (28-26, 25,12, 25-19) win over Columbia on Friday (Oct. 29). Kate Sheire and Sophia Miller led the way for the Brown offense.
Sheire reached double-figure kills for the fifth-straight match, leading the Bears' offense with 13 kills. Miller finished with 12 kills, also hitting the double-digit kill mark for the fifth-straight game. Four other Bears finished the match with three kills each. Cierra Jenkins guided the offense with 29 assists and posted a double-double with 12 digs.
On defense, Victoria Vo led the way with 16 digs, Miller finished with 12 for a double-double and Jilienne Widener collected 11. At the net, Brown finished with 10 blocks. Beau Vanderlaan led the way with five blocks while Gabby Derrick and Sheire each had four.
The offense struggled early as the Bears hit .081 in the first set. Overall, Brown hit .188, which is the lowest hitting percentage of the year in a win for the Bears. For the third time in Ivy League play, Brown held its opponent under .100 hitting, holding Columbia to .079 for the match.
"Columbia is a tough environment to play in and they have one of the best outside hitters in the league," said head coach Ahen Kim. "We did a good job of scouting and our job was to contain her and we did that. It was a great rebound after a tough loss at home and to do it on the road and in three sets in a big win for us."
Brown started the first set up 3-1 after kills by Jenkins and Sheire. The set remained close with Columbia up 12-10 but the Lions used a 4-0 run that included three Brown errors to break open the set. Brown responded with a run of its own as Sheire started with a kill. Back-to-back aces from Kaitlyn Wong followed by an error and block by Vanderlaan made the score 15-16 and after a Columbia timeout, a kill by Jenkins tied the set.
Columbia pushed the lead to 22-18, but errors by the Lions kept Brown in the set. After a kill by the Lions made the score 23-20, Miller started a run for the Bears with a kill. An error by the Lions followed by a block from Derrick tied the set at 23. Brown earned set point with a kill by Sheire but a service error continued the set. The teams traded points as the set went into extra points but at 26-26, back-to-back errors from Columbia gave Brown the point.
After falling behind 6-3 to start the second, Brown took control. The Bears responded with a 9-0 run that featured three kills by Sheire and two from Widener. Miller took part in another Brown run that helped push the lead to 24-11. Columbia stopped the run but Sheire picked up a kill to give Brown the 25-12 set win.
Set three went back and forth with Columbia holding a 16-14 lead. Sheire responded with three kills in a 4-0 run to put Brown up 18-16 forcing a Lion timeout. Miller came out of the timeout with a kill and Brown never looked back. Kills from Vanderlaan and Derrick ended the match.
The Bears will remain on the road for a match against Cornell on Saturday (Oct. 30) at 3 p.m.
