Van Rootselaar Scores Twice as Field Hockey Falls to Cornell in Double Overtime
10/23/2021 1:54:00 PM | Field Hockey
recorded her first career hat trick, scoring twice in five minutes late in the fourth quarter to force overtime, but the Cornell Big Red scored in double overtime for the 4-3 conference win over the Bears Saturday in Ithaca.
Brown drops to 6-9 overall and 2-3 in Ivy League play. Cornell improves to 8-6 overall and 3-2 in Ivy League play.
"We were very flat in the first half and had difficulty stringing passes together," said head coach Jill Reeve. "But our second half was excellent. Though Cornell scored some solid goals, our come-from-behind in the end was even more impressive. It's a shame we weren't able to close out the game with a win; we had our chances."
Brown and Cornell played a scoreless first quarter with possession on both sides of the field. The Big Red received the three penalty corners of the period, but Jodie Brine turned aside the lone shot coming from the corners.
Cornell scored the game's first goal just over two minutes into the second quarter. Hanke Govaert crossed the ball through the circle to Olivia Friedberg, who scored her second of the season with a one-time shot.
Van Rootselaar tied the game at 1-1 less than four minutes after Cornell's goal, capitalizing on Brown's second consecutive penalty corner. Lindsey Ross triggered the ball to Mikayla Walsh, who found van Rootselaar to her right for a shot from the top of the scoring circle. Ross and Walsh picked up assists on the penalty corner goal.
The Big Red found the back of the net in the final minute of the second frame as Caroline Ramsey fired a shot off Cornell's fourth penalty corner of the match. Bridget Mahoney and Kate MacGillis assisted on the penalty corner goal.
Cornell doubled its lead with one minute to play in the third corner on its sixth penalty corner of the game. Ramsey took the initial shot and Avery Smith got her stick on the ball for a tip and scored.
The Bears cut into Cornell's lead with 5:38 remaining in regulation. Van Rootselaar carried the ball into the Big Red zone on a 3-on-2 rush and passed the ball forward to Imogen Govan at the goal line, who scored her second goal of the season.
Van Rootselaar forced a Cornell turnover late in the fourth quarter and brought the ball with speed into the scoring circle. She took a shot as she fell over and was awarded a penalty stroke. Van Rootselaar's shot was stopped by Park, but it was ruled Park moved early, giving van Rootselaar another penalty stroke, where she scored her third of the game for the hat trick.
Cornell's Isabella Palde scored the game-winning goal with about three minutes remaining in double overtime to give the Big Red the conference win.
The two-goal outburst marked van Rootselaar's fifth multi-goal game and ninth multi-point game of her career.
With the two goals and assist, van Rootselaar now has 12 goals and 29 points through 15 games this season. She is tied for fourth in Brown's record book for goals in a season and tied for fourth in the record book in points. Van Rootselaar now ranks tied for sixth in program history in career goals and is tied for eighth in program history in points. She is tied for seventh in program history with 16 career assists.
The Bears return to Goldberger Family Field for Senior Day on Saturday, Oct. 30 against the Princeton Tigers. Brown will honor its three seniors prior to the 12 p.m. start. Next Saturday's game will stream on ESPN+.
