PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown (10-3, 3-0 Ivy) won the third and fourth sets at Pizzitola Sports Complex to capture its sixth straight victory and third straight win to begin Ivy League play over Columbia (4-8, 1-2 Ivy) Saturday evening.
"I'm really proud of our team and our great start, 10-3 overall," said head coach Ahen Kim. "This weekend's body of work, specifically today, wasn't our best, but we still got away with a win and were pretty deep on the bench. Gabby Derrick stepping in was the spark we needed then we were able to play around that."
Kate Sheire (14), Beau Vanderlaan (13), and Sophia Miller (12) all finished with double-digit kills to lead the Bears. Cierra Jenkins led the Bears with 37 assists while four Bears finished with double-digit digs: Victoria Vo (18), Kayla Griebl (11), Jenkins (10), and Miller (10).
The Lions jumped to a 7-1 lead in the opening set before the Bears battled back to even the set at 10-10. From there, Brown went on a 7-3 run to push the lead to 17-13 in the set, capped off with a block from Vanderlaan and Miller. In the back-and-forth set, Columbia drew even at 22-22 before the Lions took a 23-22 lead on a kill from Saj McBurrows. Brown won the following three points to take the set with Vanderlaan knocking down the final kill.
The second set played much like the first with both teams taking leads before runs from the other side evened the score. Vanderlaan had two straight kills for the Bears to even the set at 16-16 before the Lions took three straight points and seven of the next 10 to eventually win the set, 25-21.
With the third set all square at 7-7, Brown rallied for five straight points and did not relinquish the lead to capture the set, 25-20. Derrick recorded two kills and two blocks in Brown's final five points of the set.
Brown tallied five straight points early in set four to take a 6-5 lead over Columbia before the two teams traded points through most of the remaining set. The Bears broke a 19-19 tie in the set with four straight points but the Lions ripped off five straight points of their own to go ahead 24-23. Facing set point, Brown found a block from Derrick and Sheire, a kill from Sheire, and a Columbia error to win the set and match.
Brown finished the match with five service aces compared to four from Columbia. The Lions committed 10 service errors while the Bears finished the match with only three. As a team, Brown finished with a .250 hitting percentage with Columbia clocking in with a .273 hitting percentage.
The Bears close out the homestand next weekend as they host Dartmouth (8-3, 0-2 Ivy) on Friday (Oct. 8) at 7 p.m. followed by Harvard (5-6, 2-0 Ivy) on Saturday (Oct. 9) at 5 p.m. Both matches will stream on ESPN+.
