PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College Friars (6-9, 1-4 Big East) scored two goals in the third quarter for a 2-0 non-conference win over the Brown Bears (6-8, 2-2 Ivy) Sunday afternoon at Lennon Turf Field.
"We played a great first half and strong second half today," said head coach Jill Reeve. "Providence did an excellent job defending our attack penalty corners. I'm excited to take on Cornell next week, we 've gained a lot over this weekend's experiences."
Brown and Providence played the first quarter scoreless with chances on both sides of the field. The Bears held a 4-0 edge in penalty corners in the quarter and a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal. Danielle van Rootselaar finished the frame with three shots on goal.
The second quarter finished scoreless with offensive chances on both sides of the field. Providence received the penalty corners in this frame, but Brown's defense successfully fended off three Friar corners.
Niamh Gowing put the Friars ahead with 9:37 remaining in the third quarter. The Friar offense counter-attacked following a Brown penalty corner and Gowing tipped a centering pass from Lisa McNamara past Brown goalkeeper Jodie Brine (4 saves) for the lead.
Providence doubled its lead with 2:15 to play in the third quarter off PC's fifth penalty corner of the game. Gowing fired the initial shot to the left corner of the net, where Nora Goddard-Despot tipped the ball into the cage.
Asia Porter (6 saves) and the Friar defense kept the Bears off the scoreboard in the final 15 minutes to give Porter her first shutout of the season.
Brown finished the game with a 13-10 advantage in shots while shots on goal were even at 6-6. The Bears also held an 8-5 edge in penalty corners.
Brown travels to Cornell to take on the Big Red in Ivy League conference play on Saturday (Oct. 23). The game is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. in Ithaca, New York and will stream on ESPN+.
