PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University head baseball coach Grant Achilles has announced the signing of Richard as the newest member of the Brown baseball program. Richard comes to Brown through a partnership with Team IMPACT, whose mission is to improve the quality of life for children facing life-threatening and chronic illnesses through the power of team.
"Our Team IMPACT partnership is something that I can't imagine not having," Achilles said. "To welcome Richard and his family into our program is something that I think we'll get just as much out of as he and his family will. To see him and his smiling face and resilience after his journey to get where he is today, along with his strong parents, we're just grateful to have them all together with our team."
Richard was officially introduced at a draft day press conference on Friday afternoon at Attanasio Family Field at Murray Stadium, during which he signed his official letter of intent. Richard's family, along with all of his new teammates and members of the Brown athletic department were in attendance. Now an official member of the Bears' baseball team, Richard will be a fixture at games, practices, and various team functions.
Richard has met with his Brown teammates and enjoyed some team events virtually since last spring, but did not have the opportunity to be with the team in person until Friday.
"It's going to be awesome having Richard as a part of the team," said junior Ryan Marra. "He's an inspiration to us all. He's a real joy to be around and I know having him around the guys will keep us lighthearted and keep our energy up. We're super excited to have him."
About Team IMPACT Team IMPACT is the only U.S. nonprofit that tackles the emotional trauma and social isolation experienced by children facing serious and chronic illnesses by matching them with a college athletic team. Our two-year therapeutic program complements a child's medical treatments, allowing the child to develop relationships and skills that help them complete the full circle of healing. Through participation in Team IMPACT's clinically informed program, children experience a true sense of belonging, resulting in increased empowerment, normalization, health promotion, and resilience. Families feel connected and supported as their child achieves individualized goals, while experiencing the joy of team camaraderie and inclusion; and student athletes gain perspective and inspiration, as well as lessons in adversity and resilience.
Founded in 2011, Team IMPACT has matched more than 2,200 children with 700+ colleges and universities in 49 states, impacting more than 60,000 student athletes.
Team IMPACT has more than 1,200 teams across the country waiting to be matched with children, ages 5-16, who have been diagnosed with a life-threatening or chronic illness and who could benefit from becoming a member of the team.
