
Women’s Soccer Celebrates Season, Presents Team Awards

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University women's soccer presented its postseason awards as part of the team's celebration Zoom call on Sunday, following a 2019 season in which the Bears won their first Ivy League title and made their first appearance in the NCAA Championships since 1994.
Junior goalkeeper Kayla Thompson (Austin, Texas) earned the program's Ridgely Most Valuable Player Award after ranking sixth in the NCAA in save percentage (.892) and ninth in goals-against average (0.44).
Senior midfielder Abby Carchio (Lakeville, Mass.) gained the team's Sarah Nicholson Outstanding Senior Award. Carchio finished her career as a three-time First Team All-Ivy honoree and ranked 15th all-time at Brown in career points (49), 16th in career goals (16), and eighth in career assists (17).
Senior midfielder Andie Gilmore (Walpole, Mass.) garnered the team's Margeson/Prell Team Spirit Award for the third straight season while senior defender Abby Kaplan (Potomac, Md.) gained the program's Dobson-Kay Coaches' Award.
Freshman forward Brittany Raphino (Randolph, Mass.) won both the Arlene Gorton '52 Rookie of the Year Award and the Denis Chartier Golden Boot Award. Raphino captured Ivy League Rookie of the Year and ECAC Rookie of the Year accolades this past fall.
New for this year, the Bears presented a Most Valuable Teammate Award to the program's Team IMPACT match, Leilani Favela. Brown signed Favela through Team IMPACT – a national nonprofit that connects children facing serious or chronic illnesses with college athletic teams, forming lifelong bonds and life-changing outcomes – in August 2019.
The Bears' seniors – Carchio, Gilmore, Kaplan, and Celia Story (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) – all earned their white letter sweaters.
Brown's freshmen – Raphino, Sheyenne Allen (Bear, Del.), Rachyl Francisco (San Jose, Calif.), Caylah Griffin (Plano, Texas), Laryssa Hamblen (Littleton, Colo.), KK Haug (Minneapolis, Minn.), Juliette Pike (Short Hills, N.J.), Ava Seelenfreund (Truckee, Calif.), and Morgan Turcotte (Lexington, Ky.) – gained their brown letter sweaters.

- The Ridgely MVP Award is presented annually as voted by the players. The award is in honor of Professor and Mrs. Beverly Ridgely for their outstanding contributions to Brown women's soccer.
- Thompson earned First Team All-Ivy, First Team All-East Region, and First Team NEWISA All-New England honors this past fall, while collecting Third Team Scholar All-America and First Team Scholar All-East Region laurels.
Sarah Nicholson Outstanding Senior Award: Abby Carchio
- Initiated in 1996, the Sarah Nicholson Outstanding Senior Award is given to a senior on the team who, through total dedication and loyalty, has given the most of themselves for the good of the team.
- Carchio earned First Team All-Ivy, Second Team All-East Region, and First Team NEWISA All-New England honors while gaining selection to the NEWISA Senior Bowl and as a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award.
Margeson/Prell Team Spirit Award: Andie Gilmore
- The Margeson/Prell Team Spirit Award is presented annually to the player who exhibits the most team spirit as voted by the players. The award is in honor of Jane Margeson, "Soccer Enthusiast," mother of Bill Margeson '37, Hall of Fame (soccer, 1970), and Professor Warren Prell who served as faculty liaison to the women's soccer program from 1995 to 2015.
- Gilmore won the team's Margeson/Prell Team Spirit Award for the third straight season.
Dobson-Kay Coaches' Award: Abby Kaplan
- The Dobson-Kay Coaches' Award is presented annually to the player(s) chosen by the coach for outstanding contribution, dedication, and sportsmanship. The award is in honor of Stan Dobson '58 and Gene Kay '58 for their strong support and promotion of the Brown women's soccer program.
- Kaplan won the award after supporting her teammates during a season in which she could not compete due to injury.
Denis Chartier Golden Boot Award: Brittany Raphino
Arlene Gorton '52 Rookie of the Year Award: Brittany Raphino
- The Denis Chartier Golden Boot Award was initiated in 2011 and is presented annually to the team's leading point scorer. It is in memory of former assistant coach, Denis Chartier, who died at the age of 56 and was a loyal, dedicated coach with the Brown women's soccer program for 15 years.
- The Arlene Gorton '52 Rookie of the Year Award, initiated in 2015, goes to the outstanding newcomer in the program as voted on by the players. The award is named after former Brown Associate Director of Athletics, Arlene Gorton – a pioneer for all women's sports at Brown in the 1970s and 1980s.
- Raphino garnered Ivy League Rookie of the Year and ECAC Rookie of the Year honors, while gaining First Team All-Ivy, First Team All-East Region, and Top Drawer Soccer Freshman Best XI Second Team accolades.
