Gymnastics Scores Season-High 193.500 in Home Finale

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University gymnastics scored a season-high 193.500 behind season bests on vault (48.550) and floor (48.575), placing second in a tri meet with Bowling Green State University and Rhode Island College on Sunday afternoon in its home finale at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
"We had so many strong routines today, and that collective effort helped us score a new season high," Brown head coach Sara Carver-Milne said. "It was great to perform so well in our final home meet and to honor our senior captain Erin Howell, who has meant so much to this team over the last four years."
Sophomore Mei Li Costa (Lawrenceville, N.J.) placed second on bars with a 9.850, sophomore Sophia Petrillo (Stoneham, Mass.) took third on bars with a career-high 9.800, and junior Rose Domonoske (Park City, Utah) came in third on beam with a season-high 9.725.
Alongside their season highs on vault (48.550) and floor (48.575), the Bears scored a 48.650 on bars and 47.725 on beam.
In the team standings, Bowling Green won the meet with a 193.900, Brown placed second with its 193.500, and RIC came in third with a 180.000. The Bears eclipsed the 193 mark for the second time this season, besting their 193.050 from this year's Ivy Classic (Feb. 23).
Prior to the meet, the Bears honored senior captain Erin Howell (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) for her hard work and dedication to the team over the last four years. Howell tallied a 9.725 on both bars and floor, matching her career high on floor and finishing in fifth place in both events.
Costa led Brown on vault with a 9.800 for fifth place while junior Alyssa Gardner (Angola, N.Y.) followed her with a 9.775, tying her season high. Freshman Abby Contello (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) scored a career-high 9.750, freshman Ella Poley (Newton, Mass.) notched a personal-best 9.650, and freshman Lauren Lazaro (Wellesley, Mass.) added a 9.575.
On bars, the Bears took two of the top three spots as Costa registered a 9.850 for second and Petrillo recorded a career-high 9.800 for third. Howell posted a 9.725 for fifth place, Poley notched a 9.650, and freshman Jasmine Lee (Bremerton, Wash.) contributed a 9.625.
Domonoske paced the Bears on beam with a season-high 9.725 for third place. Costa and Lazaro each scored a 9.625 to tie for fifth place while junior Emma Hansen (Cincinnati, Ohio) charted a 9.575.
On floor, Carolanne Van Zandt (Covington, La.) led Brown with a career-high 9.775 for fourth place. Howell and Lazaro each placed fifth with a 9.725, tying a personal best for Howell. Domonoske matched her season-high with a 9.700, and Gardner tallied a 9.650.
Next, Brown concludes its regular season at Rutgers with Yale on Friday, March 13 at 7:00 p.m. (BTN+). The Bears were originally scheduled to travel to the state of California for two meets next weekend but have altered their travel plans due to the evolving impact of novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
